About this listen

Can the truth really set you free? Genevieve Applegate is tired of her stagnant life and she's ready to make a change by going after her dream job in New Jersey. The listing seems ideal when Genevieve scans it, but a big surprise comes at her interview: Out Shore Magazine is an LGBT publication. She's willing to work around this detail with an innocent lie, one she'll keep from her longtime boyfriend as well as her new boss, Harper Davies. Out Shore has been Harper's main focus since her heart was broken years ago, but Genevieve may be the one to change that with her fresh perspective and charm. While both women enjoy what they learn about each other, Genevieve is most surprised by what she learns about herself. Pretending to be a lesbian has never felt more honest.

What a wonderful book.

From the first chapter, you will be drawn in. This book is one of the best coming out books I've read. ( note, this is really not about coming out it's just something with in the story of one of the characters that blossoms) I highly recommend it yo anyone who wants a feel good read with a great and satisfying ending.

good until the end

So I really liked the story in the main and I loved getting to know the various caste. where the story lost me was the conflict at the end. it was the obvious one sure but it didn't make sense in light of the romantic scene previous... big big spoilers, I apologize. the ex "reveals" the MC's past relationship with a man and insinuates that she's pretending to be gay to get the job. the only part of her reveal that the mc hadn't already told the boss was she thought she was straight, everything else was out in the open... sooooo the ex makes one inflammatory statement that was based on information that mc already explained in length to her love interest and suddenly "you were lying to me this whole time?!?". that confused me. but besides that it was a great story with wonderfully relatable characters.

Good story, but the narrator could've been better

I loved the story and overall the narrator read well. However, there were many mispronunciations and she used incorrect names for characters several time, calling the lead character Jennifer at time and renaming her best friend Chloe to Zoey at least once.

Good Car; Bad Engine

The author tells an excellent story and the whole concept of the novel is a good one; unfortunately the underlying concept drops the level precipitously. Genevieve Applegate is a straight woman who answers an add without really looking at it and finds herself posing as a lesbian and writing for an LGBT periodical. The premise that causes the problem for me is that the author takes the job without doing any research or preparing a cover story; thus keeps being surprised by questions and situations she would have logically come up with stories to cover. Then even when apprised of the prevalent culture of the office of her new employer, she does only cursory research and still doesn't bother to assemble any sort of fictional life story. I don't know, perhaps something along the line of; "I was afraid to come out in my small town, or I never realized that I was a lesbian." Then there is the shock she feels whenever she's romantically approached by women, as if it's an unimaginable happening every time it occurs. The lead characters are well drawn and likable and the secondary players work quite well. If you can appreciate a good story despite a bad premise and can suspend a great deal of disbelief in order to enjoy a good narrative, give this one a shot.

Excellent audio!

I really enjoyed Fake it till You Make it. I was a little put off by the title. But ended up buying it anyway. Interesting story of a young journalist trying to make it. Most readers/listeners are going to have problems with a lie in the work place and to fellow co workers. This is where the debates will center on. When is it acceptable ? Or never acceptable? AJ Ferraro does her usual excellent job with the narration.
