About this listen
Getting to know the Church Fathers means getting to know our own roots. It means knowing more deeply who we are as we learn more and more about who they are. The early Christians are our ancestors, our common genealogy, our family. When we look to our roots, what do we see?
That's what Mike Aquilina shows you in this book. The Fathers managed to pull off an amazing achievement. They converted the pagan world in a mere two and a half centuries. They did it without any resources, without any social or political power. They did it with the most primitive communications media. Yet their Church sustained a steady growth rate of 40 percent per decade over the course of those centuries. Maybe there's something we can learn from them. This book is a journey into that world, a tour where your guides are the Fathers.

The path of following Jesus is an ancient and storied spiritual tradition. Yet many believers are not familiar with the three major forms of prayer and the three stages of spiritual growth that exist to bring them closer to God. In his most personal book yet, Brant Pitre, PhD, draws on the riches of the Bible, the words of Jesus, and the writings of mystics across the centuries to shed light on the mystery - and wonder - of the spiritual life.

Story
One Old Testament passage seized the imagination of the early Church - and directed Christian hearts and minds toward the Eucharist. It was the oracle of Malachi 1:11, and it was cited (like Isaiah’s Suffering Servant oracles) to prove the identity of the Messiah through his church and his sacrament. In The Eucharist Foretold: The Lost Prophecy of Malachi, Mike Aquilina reveals that the Messiah’s true identity - and the identity of the Eucharist - helps us find our identity as “Catholic”, and will lead us to discover our roots in the religion of ancient Israel.

Story
Long before the New Testament was a document, it was a sacrament. Jesus called the Eucharist by the name Christians subsequently gave to the latter books of the Holy Bible. It was the "New Covenant," the "New Testament," in his blood. Christians later extended the phrase to cover the books produced by the apostles and their companions; but they did so because these were the books that could be read at Mass.

Of all things Catholic, there is nothing that is so familiar as the Mass. With its unchanging prayers, the Mass fits Catholics like their favorite clothes. Yet most Catholics sitting in the pews on Sundays fail to see the powerful supernatural drama that enfolds them. Pope John Paul II described the Mass as "Heaven on Earth," explaining that what "we celebrate on Earth is a mysterious participation in the heavenly liturgy."

Most Christians are familiar with the Apostle Paul's teaching that Christ is the "Bridegroom" and the Church is the "Bride." But what does this really mean? And what would ever possess Paul to compare the death of Christ to the love of a husband for his wife? If you would have been at the Crucifixion, with Jesus hanging there dying, is that how you would have described it? How could a first-century Jew like Paul, who knew how brutal Roman crucifixions were, have ever compared the execution of Jesus to a wedding?

The Story of a Soul conveys St. Therese of Lisieux's "Little Way" of spiritual childhood - her "elevator" to Heaven, as she called it. This method was approved by Pope Pius XI as a way for all to grow in holiness through unfailing confidence and childlike delight in God's merciful love. Again and again in this audiobook, St. Therese shows us how her "Little Way" of love and trust comes straight from Sacred Scripture.

Hahn shows that reason and revelation, as well as nature and the supernatural, are not opposed to one another; rather, they offer complementary evidence that God exists. He is someone, and He has a personality, a personal style, that is discernable and knowable.

In 2007, Joseph Ratzinger published his first book as Pope Benedict XVI in order “to make known the figure and message of Jesus”. Now, the Pope focuses exclusively on the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life as a child. The root of these stories is the experience of hope found in the birth of Jesus and the affirmations of surrender and service embodied in his parents, Joseph and Mary.

One of Cardinal Ratzinger's most important and widely read books, this volume is a revised second edition with an improved translation and an in-depth preface by the Cardinal. As he states in the preface, since this book was first published over 30 years ago, many changes and significant events have occurred in the world, and in the Church. But even so, he says he is firmly convinced that his fundamental approach in this book is still very timely and crucial for the spiritual needs of modern man.

Story
The saints, the heroes of the Roman Catholic faith, lived lives of holiness, dedicated to serving God. The saints lived at different times in different places throughout history, but they all shared a love of God that has been documented through the teachings of the Church. Today, the saints serve as examples for all Catholics, showing the believers how to lead a more spiritual life. Catholic devotions are particular customs, rituals and practices of worship or in honour of the saints that are in addition to the liturgy of the Catholic Church.

Saint Augustine is one of the most influential figures in all of Christianity, yet his path to sainthood was by no means assured. Born in AD 354 to a pagan father and a Christian mother, Augustine spent the first 30 years of his life struggling to understand the nature of God and his world. He learned about Christianity as a child but was never baptized, choosing instead to immerse himself in the study of rhetoric, Manicheanism, and then Neoplatonism - all the while indulging in a life of lust and greed.

Story
Meister Eckhart was a medieval Christian mystic whose wisdom powerfully appeals to seekers seven centuries after his death. In the modern era, Eckhart's writings have struck a chord with thinkers as diverse as Heidegger, Merton, Sartre, John Paul II, and the current Dalai Lama. He is the inspiration for the best-selling New Age author Eckhart Tolle's pen name, and his 14th-century quotes have become an online sensation. Today, a variety of Christians, as well as many Zen Buddhists, Sufi Muslims, Jewish Cabbalists, and various spiritual seekers, all claim Eckhart as their own.

Story
The Council of Nicea was not clerics in a dark and ornate hall. It was brawls in churchyards; it was emperors and governors fighting to save the empire; it was political intrigue as the governments of church and state blended into a volatile stew. It was the way a fringe group of peace-loving communal worshipers of a crucified Palestinian prophet conquered the Roman Empire.

Story
Historians know virtually nothing about the two decades following the crucifixion of Jesus, when his followers regrouped and began to spread his message. During this time the man we know as the apostle Paul joined the movement and began to preach to the gentiles. Using the oldest Christian documents that we have - the letters of Paul - as well as other early Christian sources, historian and scholar James Tabor reconstructs the origins of Christianity.

A man who has consciously and deliberately walked the path of Christ, John Shelby Spong has lived his entire life inside the Christian Church. In this profound and considered work, he offers a radical new way to look at the gospels today as he shows just how deeply Jewish the Christian Gospels are and how much they reflect the Jewish scriptures, history, and patterns of worship.

Story
The early Christian Church was a chaos of contending beliefs. Some groups of Christians claimed that there was not one God but two or twelve or thirty. Some believed that the world had not been created by God but by a lesser, ignorant deity. Certain sects maintained that Jesus was human but not divine, while others said he was divine but not human.

Judaism is one of the oldest religions in the world, and it has preserved its distinctive identity despite the extraordinarily diverse forms and beliefs it has embodied over the course of more than three millennia. A History of Judaism provides the first truly comprehensive look in one volume at how this great religion came to be, how it has evolved from one age to the next, and how its various strains, sects, and traditions have related to each other.

Between 50 and 90 CE, the various writings that comprise the New Testament were written, including the four Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles of Paul, and other letters to more general communities of the early Church. But what is recognized as the 26 books of the New Testament today, in literally hundreds of English translations, actually took several more centuries to be determined as "canonical" by the Church.

Places the Fathers in Context
This is a shorter book that is a more historical description of early Christians and the challenges they faced as opposed to early church theology. I found it complimentary to "When the Church Was Young".
You will not learn a great deal on any church father, but what you know about the early church fathers will be enriched by understanding them in a deeper historical context.

More about the Fathers with less sermon
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really time well spent. I wanted information about the "Fathers" of the church; I feel that I could have gotten much more from a book that focused on the Fathers.
Any additional comments?
The sermon and reading list of the last two sessions had little to do with the Fathers.

Fine for beginners, but needs meat
After the first few chapters about the Church fathers the subjects range almost aimlessly, like someone trying to pad the content. It's all still educational and fascinating, but detracts from the book's cohesion and feels more like a compilation of church pamphlets, the kind you can get at the door by the handful. The author also name-drops so many books and authors, it feels more like a catalog than a book in its own right.
The narrator's showroom voice doesn't help either. There's no sense of weight to the seriousness of the topics, which makes it hard to ignore minor pronunciation errors.

Early Christians and their writings
Where does Faith of Our Fathers rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Within the religious books to which I have listened, it is high. The book is enjoyable. The material is historical relevant. The author writes in a style that is easy to understand for the lay person, and the style translates well into the audio format. It is a book of early Christian history, written by a prolific and respected Catholic author.
What did you like best about this story?
The expositions on the Didache and the Apocrypha.
What does Greg Willits bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His tone is one of respect. There is never a hint of doubt or a hidden sneer behind his reading of the material, the quoted writings from the ancient Christians, or from the Bible. He stays true to the spirit of the material. A small hiccup: pronouncing Elaine Pagels as rhyming with "haggles" rather than "bagels". All-in-all, a solid narrator.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I had no extreme reaction. I enjoyed the the author's weaving of early church history and how to tie that into our own living Faith of today.
Any additional comments?
I wish that more of Mr. Aquilina's books were available on audible, especially "Mass of the Early Christians", "The Fathers of the Church", and his trilogy written with Cardinal Wuerl: "The Mass", "The Church" and "The Feasts".

Like a really long homily with no proof
Would you be willing to try another one of Greg Willits’s performances?
I will definitely listen to the sample first. His performance here wasn't too hot, kind of dry and preachy-sounding.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The author clearly respects the Church Fathers and wishes to pass on his excitement to others.
Any additional comments?
I wanted a book that described the Church Fathers, gave me (as detailed as possible) stories of their lives, and gave me extensive quotes from their writings. Instead, Aquilina glosses over the actual details and does a lot of comparing of the faith of the Church Fathers with the general apathy of many in the Church today... which isn't very helpful, because he doesn't go in-depth into their lives or writings, so not much of a comparison can be made. Aquilina comes across as preachy instead of descriptive. Not what I was looking for.
