Publisher's summary

Strangers meet, romance blossoms. But there's a test...A classic fairytale retold.

Good English families all have a house in the country with a deer park, a trout stream, and an army of gardeners. They should have a son and if it can be managed, he should be handsome. Cleverness isn't important. Daughters in limited quantities are fine so long as they are pretty. Bastards are inconvenient and best ignored. It's not a big problem, unless you are one. Unfortunately, Sophy is.

Sick of her outcast role, she escapes her father's house, only to fall from her horse during a spring storm. Injured, soaked, and shivering, she stumbles to a stranger's door - Tom, a blunt edged merchant from a family of vulgar upstarts. Mistaking Sophy for the genuine article, he takes her in. Sophy can't resist twisting the truth. Soon she's caught in her own snare - and it might just be a noose.

Loved this story!

Very romantic without a bunch of descriptive sex scenes. The narrator was really good in my opinion. And the second and third books in this series are even better than this one!

Red headed daughter finding love

I thought this historic romance was exciting. I loved the details about society in that time.

My first book from this author...

But won’t be my last! Loved it. And the narrator was great! A bad narrator can ruin a good story.

Wonderful!

Once I got past the first chapter, I loved this book. I loved the story of Sophie and Tom. One of the best parts of a book is seeing how the characters grow and change and this story spends some time with both characters as they grow up. I enjoyed this because it gives depth to them as adults. The reader has insight to why they feel and react they way they do. I also really appreciated that some depth was given to secondary characters like the parents of Sophie and Tom. In particular, Sophie's step mom. It's easy to paint her as the mean step mother, as most stories would do, but the author makes the effort to show her as a more complex person. I found myself rooting for her and her marriage to Lord Fairchild. I still want to know if they will find love together! I'll definitely read the sequel and hope that there's more written about them. My only complaint is the ending. It was definitely a feel good ending but a little glossed over. I wish there had been more written about the intimacy between Sophy and Tom during the wedding and wedding night.

Best Romance Ever !

I almost never post reviews, but always read them when trying to decide whether to purchase. I want future readers to know this is the most well written unique romance I have ever read and it achieved that without any sex scenes ! The love story has such a unique story line and one of the best narrators I have heard and I have been with audible for years. I cried with joy at the conclusion. Another thing I almost never do. And on top of all that , this novel is and it's sequels are FREE with Audible Plus. I certainly wouldn't have minded paying for it. I am so happy to have discovered this author,Jaima Fixson and narrator, Lucy Peterson. Can't believe she isn't more well known and hasn't written more books than she has.

Truly amazing

Such a wonderful story. Keeps one spellbound to the end. I have never heard a better narrator either.

Excellent performance and a pretty cute story

Lucy Paterson is an EXCELLENT voice actor and she truly brings this piece to life. The book itself is exactly what it advertises: A Regency romance.

Something different. And quite good.

Excellent debut novel. Sophie is the illegitimate daughter of Lord Fairchild, and I particularly liked how the author showed the ups and downs of Sophie's childhood and adolescent years. The characters are realistic and complex; nobody is entirely good or bad. And there is a bit of a "mystery" regarding Sophie's choice of a groom. Will it be the wealthy Cit next door or her aristocratic cousin Alisdair? The outcome is not obvious.

I enjoyed Lucy Paterson's narration, having earlier been impressed with her narration of Mary Stewart’s Wildfire at Midnight. I am moving on to the next installment, also available via Audible Escape.
