Publisher's summary

Leonie of Bosewood is a halfling, caught between the Faerie and human worlds yet belonging in neither. She does her best to hide her magical abilities, mindful that being different in medieval England is tantamount to death. But her untamed spirit and wild beauty are like a beacon to the one man whose attention could expose her....

Philippe le Peregrine has devoted his life to the crown, his strength and courage winning him the king’s gratitude. In return he asks but one indulgence: never to be forced to take a wife. Because Philippe hides his own secret, a curse condemning him to celibate solitude, he faces life without the one woman whose allure he cannot ignore. And yet as unseen forces gather, preparing for a mystical battle for dominion over the human world, Leonie and Philippe realize that only together are they strong enough to conquer the engulfing evil.

Wow. So much I didn't expect.

Wow. Just: wow. This book is a time piece set in the time of the Normans and the Saxons when England and Scotland were awash in blood and battle. Very well done in the research department. Being a fantasy, I really hadn't expected how well and truly we would be immersed in that time period and boy was it a ride! Mrs. Jacobs meshed her fantsy novel chock full of the old European myths with the morals and customs of the time that it was truly beautiful.

The story was told from multiple perspectives, though primarily from our main duo Phillipe (a knight of king Rufus)and Leone (an heiress and half Faerie). It's full of intrigue, political maneuverings, scheming parents and sovereigns, secrets, myth, and of course romance so you should get any need you have fulfilled. There are also some very steamy scenes as well as a few battles with some blood and death.

The narrator did a great job. There was no voice he did that grated or sounded awful and I enjoyed the whole ride.

Good Historical Fantasy Romance

I had read one print book by Delle Jacobs before and thought I'd give this one a try. Overall, I wasn't disappointed. While there was nothing about this book that made me want to rush out and tell all my friends, it was a nice solid story and a polished audio performance.

This book is a historical fantasy romance that takes place during the rule of William the 2nd, not too long after his father, William the Conqueror won England for the Normans. The setting is in the north of England, in the borderlands with Scotland. What really impressed me was that the author used real historical figures. Indeed, William II (aka Rufus or the Red King) and Robert DeMowbray, Earl of Northumbria are both real historical figures and both were major characters in this book. Given this is historical fantasy, I was awed at how she was able to keep her history so accurate while working in the fantasy elements.

The romance, on the other hand, comes off as just a bit cheesy, but perhaps that's just because the author tries to stay true to the language of the time. Leonie is half fae, but also a great heiress with many holdings in this critical area. Phillippe is a widower, and is one of the king's most trusted knights. He lost his wife in a battle with a sorcerer, and believing himself cursed, has vowed to never wed, or even bed, again. It's hard to tell more without spoilers, but there are fae, shades, sorcerers, magical hounds and all sorts of fantasy elements included in the book, and it made for a fun read.

The narrator had the perfect cadence and accent for this book, and the result was a professionally done performance.

Best of faerie, sword and sorcery and romance

Follow the story of. Half long human/fearie as she discovers more about herself and the mysterious Phillip with secrets of his own. The intense romance scenes, daring fights and bold characters make this novel amazing. Such a big fan of Delle Jacobs.

Great story!

Loved the story. The mixing of scary with the whole knights and lovely, strong brave faerie. The narrator did an excellent job of the different characters. Except for the sex scenes this could have been a good book for YD. sex scenes way to explicit however just for warned.

If you’re in the mood for nsfw with a plot

I picked this up because I was in the mood for some romance and I liked the setting.
It was maybe on me for not foreseeing it, but I did not expect the characters to be so horny all the time. There are a few sex scenes. And a lot of talk of shafts. And thoughts of shafts. And hardening of shafts. And unnamed nubs. If the mains just got laid by someone else before seeing each other, they would probably like each other less. They have some banter, but it isn’t particularly witty. Once they get older and the novelty of all the sex has worn off I don’t know why they would stay together.

The setting is enjoyable. The plot is relatively engaging. The world building is good.

If you’re in the mood for steamy romance in a solid setting with a decent plot, pick it up. If you don’t want to hear about shafts, then you’ll want to give this a skip.

The cross and the fay

A great combination of the Christians in England with the undertones of those who came before. Though I don’t think the Christian dogma would have allowed the two of them to live.
