About this listen
Eve's Ransom, written in 1895, is the story of a bizarre triangle of love. An educated but unsuccessful man, Hilliard, is trapped in grimy Birmingham until he receives a totally unexpected windfall. He goes in search of a woman whose picture he had seen in his landlady's photo album.
Typical of most of Gissings books the setting is autobiographically faithful and the theme is freedom. The writing is crisp, the narrative swift in this, as H. G. Wells said, "the best and least appreciated of his novels".

Story
Set in the literary and journalistic buzz of late 19th-century London, New Grub Street depicts a world that George Gissing knew inside out. Elements of his own experience are diffused in different characters – in particular the struggling, talented Edwin Reardon and the young, "modern" Jasper Milvain – through which he explores the sense of crisis for writers at the time: the gulf between aesthetic integrity and commercial success. It was the first major novel to place the concept of authorship at the heart of the plot.

The young Monica Madden cries for two days before her marriage to Edmund Widdowson; the ensuing claustrophobia, which opens the door for the more desirable Bevis, contrasts with Rhoda's independence - yet Rhoda's own principles are tested when she falls in love rather by accident.... The Odd Women is a remarkable book, ultimately optimistic in its hope for a societal shift that will benefit both men and women alike.

Thomas Hardy brings us an England that once existed but no more. It is rural, traditional, pastoral - a society of mannered conduct that flows like a deep river where powerful currents eddy and swirl. In this powerful novel of love and disillusion, Hardy's heroine is torn between the three men in her life. Passionate but capricious, her romantic involvements have fascinated generations of readers.

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Story
Prince Lyov Nikolayevitch Myshkin is one of the great characters in Russian literature. Is he a saint or just naïve? Is he an idealist or, as many in General Epanchin's society feel, an "idiot"? Certainly his return to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss clinic has a dramatic effect on the beautiful Aglaia, youngest of the Epanchin daughters, and on the charismatic but willful Nastasya Filippovna. As he paints a vivid picture of Russian society, Dostoyevsky shows how principles conflict with emotions - with tragic results.

Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

In this world of bribes, vendettas, and swindling, in which heiresses are gambled and won, Trollope's characters embody all the vices: Lady Carbury is 'false from head to foot'; her son Felix has 'the instincts of a horse, not approaching the higher sympathies of a dog'; and Melmotte - the colossal figure who dominates the book - is a 'horrid, big, rich scoundrel...a bloated swindler...a vile city ruffian'. But as vile as he is, he is considered one of Trollope's greatest creations.

Trollope's classic novel features Reverend Septimus Harding, the elderly warden of the Barchester alms-house. However, for a man devoting himself to helping the poor, Reverend Harding's salary is rather lucrative. Aiming to ease his conscience and quiet his neighbors' whispers, he decides to divest himself of all the income he earns at the alms-house. But this decision causes unforeseen complications. The first of his Barsetshire series, this novel provides a detailed, gently satirical portrayal of 19th century British life.

Story
Written before she began her experiments in the writing of fiction, Virginia Woolf's second novel, Night and Day, is a story about a group of young people trying to discover what it means to fall in love. It asks all the big questions: What does it mean to fall in love? Does marriage grant happiness? What is happiness? Night and Day is a conventional novel; however, it maps out for us the world of Virginia Woolf in its wondrous prose: For her it was the beginning, leading on to a prolonged engagement with her search for the means to express the "inner life".

Howells’ best-known work and a subtle classic of its time, The Rise of Silas Lapham is an elegant tale of Boston society and manners. After garnering a fortune in the paint business, Silas Lapham moves his family from their Vermont farm to the city of Boston in order to improve his social position. The consequences of this endeavor are both humorous and tragic as the greedy Silas brings his company to the brink of bankruptcy.

Story
E. M. Forster's first novel is a witty comedy of manners that is tinged with tragedy. It tells the story of Lilia Herriton, who proves to be an embarrassment to her late husband's family as, in the small Tuscan town of Monteriano, she begins a relationship with a much younger Italian man - classless, uncouth, and highly unsuitable. A subtle attack on Edwardian values and a humanely sympathetic portrayal of the clash of two cultures, Where Angels Fear to Tread is also a profound exploration of character and virtue.

Story
Probably the most shocking of the Brontës' novels, this novel had an instant and phenomenal success and is widely considered to be one of the first sustained feminist novels. A mysterious widow, Mrs. Helen Graham, arrives at Wildfell Hall, a nearby old mansion. A source of curiosity for the small community, the reticent Helen and her young son Arthur are slowly drawn into the social circles of the village.

Story
Pretty, impecunious Sally Nicholas never dreamed a fortune could prove a disadvantage, until she became an heiress and watched in bewilderment as her orderly existence went haywire. Coping first with her brother's wild theatrical ambitions, then with the defection of her fiancé and his immediate replacement by a much more appropriate but strangely unattractive suitor, Sally finds that life in New York is becoming altogether too complicated, and a trip to England only makes the whole situation worse.

Boy Meets Girl Who Meets His Best Friend
This is a story of a boy and girl being slowly sucked into to the murk and grime that is industrial Birmingham, inch by inch losing their souls and humanity. The boy received a windfall which he used for a while, for women, drink and song. He is my kind of guy. His priorities belong to a guy. It is all understandable. What comes next is not. He did the most inexplicable thing even inexplicable to himself. He paid for a trip to Paris for her and her friend and did not ask for anything in return. During the months in Paris, the girl regains her soul and humanity becoming obligated to the boy.
Honor, obligation, gratitude and love in a complex mix are the issues with which Gissing's triangle deals and perhaps seem strange to our modern sensibilities of into bed then onto the next meaningless bed. I understand Hilliard completely. He like Mr. Darcy, met a beautiful woman, recognized her superior qualities then promptly and passionately fell in love, all the while, unlike Darcy, knowing she didn't return his love. Yet, there is an element of purchase in his behavior toward her. Eve is more difficult. Was she an Isabella Thorpe (Northanger Abbey) stringing along one man while trying for a richer? No, I don't think so. Security, fear, gratitude, love and friendship are part of her mix. Then there are those tiny indecisive steps one after another which decide. In the end, she is a very attractive heroine but doesn't he have an obligation to let her go even if it was his money which had made possible her new self, her ransom?

I can't believe I finished this
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
What a tedious story this is. At the center is a man's fascination for a woman (Eve) and his trying to figure out what's going on with her. Eve is an enigmatic figure but all surface. Her deceptions lack a motive sufficient to keep this narrative moving.
What was most disappointing about George Gissing’s story?
Lack of invention, monotonously conceived characters who don't change much. They learn a little, maybe, but not enough to warrant a novel. In conception, it's more like a tale. It's a lttle like Henry James-- if you can imagine James writing on a day when he suffered a concussion.
How could the performance have been better?
There is no way the performance could have been better unless the reader were different. This reader sounded like she was in a trance and reading to an audience of zombies. One of the worst.

beautiful sentence structure
but the plot was rather stretched. i knew how it would end by the first third of the book. and by the middle i was so irritated by the book i called it up on project gutenberg to see if i was right. i was and did not bother finishing it. Though Gissing could put a sentence together with the best of them, the plot is unbelievable, the characters act in fake ways with no preparation whatsoever from the author.
a note about the reader. she has a nice voice and did the accents fairly well, but the way her sentences continued to drift into monotone was very annoying. a mediocre book needs a great reader to pull it off. while she could do the voices, i often had the feeling i was listening to someone off Librivox. (who i endlessly admire for giving of their time, but who do not attempt to make money off their unprofessional audio recordings.)
if you are looking for something richly written, great plot, great reader...this is only one out of the three. if only dickens had written just a bit more, or gaskell, the brontes, george eliot? the reason Gissing is not mentioned in their company becomes clear in this book. all in my opinion...
