About this listen

The Lovely Bones meets Where the Crawdads Sing in this remarkable debut set in Appalachia.

In her rural Appalachian holler, 10-year-old Misty’s closest friends are the crawdads. Misty can speak to them, to the birds, to the creek, to everything outside, and she understands how they think. She knows that if she could just speak to her parents in the same way, she could stop all the fighting. But it’s too hard.

Strange things start to happen in the holler. When her friend William takes their friendship too far, Misty’s need to connect is greater than ever, but it’s hard to talk about what you don’t understand. This is the story of one tough-as-nails girl whose choices are few but whose imagination is boundless, as her coping becomes a battle cry for everyone around her - a beautifully honest exploration of healing and hope.

Ashley Blooms captures the voice and soul of a 10 year old girl as she endures person trauma while trying to comprehend the world around her in this mystical story set in a coal mining mountain community. Eileen Stevens does a wonderful job giving voice to the characters. Hard to put down, but sad it’s finished.

Beautifully told, haunting story of grief and strength.

I loved it ! It was kind of disturbing at first but how you wrote it made it interesting understand.

What stood out the most, was the fantasy through real trauma.

I really loved this book and once you surrender to the rhythm of the story it’s very heart opening. This book might not be for everyone but if you can open your mind, surrender your ideas of what’s possible, you might like it.

Good story

Written with words of honesty without touching a part that is off limits...because, it is bought and paid for and it is owned.

Beautiful

Main character is hard to believe...too fragile and vulnerable...lost in her bizarre world of critters who have no point...rape is trivialize and the repetition is minimalizing. The ability to escape one's skin is not only unbelievable, but silly at best.

Bizarre, Hard to follow, too far "out there"
