About this listen

The Roadmakers left only ruins behind—but what magnificent ruins! Their concrete highways still cross the continent. Their cups, combs, and jewelry are found in every Illyrian home. They left behind a legend, too-a hidden sanctuary called Haven, where even now the secrets of their civilization might still be found.

Chaka's brother was one of those who sought to find Haven and never returned. But now Chaka has inherited a rare Roadmaker artifact—a book called A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court—which has inspired her to follow in his footsteps. Gathering an unlikely band of companions around her, Chaka embarks upon a journey where she will encounter bloodthirsty river pirates, electronic ghosts who mourn their lost civilization, and machines that skim over the ground and air. Ultimately, the group will learn the truth about their own mysterious past.

Highly recommended and thought provoking

Written more than two decades before the pandemic hit the world this book tells a tale of what can be lost in a devastating calamity. Very sobering.

Unsatisfying ending!

This is my second book by Jack McDevitt & both started off great but about 3/4 of the way through became tedious. I started hitting forward by 30 seconds each time the ridiculous attempt at a romance reared its ugly head. If he would’ve cut out about 3 hours & focused more on the ending this could’ve been a really good book. As it is now it’s average at best.

The narrator was bad. His talking voice was excellent & his male voices were ok. His female voices were ridiculous. The female voices all sounded like they were terrified & on the verge of crying regardless of the situation. I would not listen to a book narrated by him again.

Overall it was disappointing. The story concept was very good but the execution wasn’t there. I’d skip this one.
