About this listen
This is the third edition of Ms. Waters’ popular book on the estrangement of parents by their adult children. This edition has been extensively rewritten and contains new chapters exploring cults, social media’s role, and coping with this tragic family rift.
When adult children estrange one or both parents, the shocked parents desperately seek answers. They search for flaws in themselves and their parenting. Hurting and embarrassed, they retreat into their darkest emotional corners while being condemned as a parental failure.
Estrangement is often treated as a family squabble that no one wants to talk about, leaving suffering parents with nowhere to turn. This book discusses likely influences of the estrangement phenomenon and outlines common characteristics. This third edition offers an expanded chapter on ways to find comfort and meaning in life beyond estrangement.

short and sweet
I wish there was a chapter for adults that do this to a parent who is terminal- in my case battling brain cancer - I wish I could see my grand. I will cling to the one I can see - so much of the book is what I am enduring - we raised 5 3 boys 2 girls... sadly my girls much like the book says have teamed up- my boys are in contact - I have expressed fear to my hubby - what

Awful in every way
Hilariously awful… ma’am what credentials do you have other than harming your child enough for him to become estranged from you? Please go elsewhere for knowledge and help on this subject.

A victim validation book for parents
Clearly, this is written from the perspective of a parent. Parents WANT TO BELIEVE that everything was fine and loving but lack the capacity for self reflection, this is so so common. Children often lack the vocabulary to be able to explain the issues. And sometimes people just have a very very hard time healing from something. That we children are supposed to just let it go borders on more abuse and y’all just continue to unwittingly dig your own graves. This woman clearly doesn’t understand that boundaries are needed to begin a healing process, demonstrating the willful ignorance of her generation regarding basic relationship skills or psychology. I see nothing in her credentials to give her credibility, and what a victim stance she’s taking in calling it a cult and accusing the mental health profession greedy in perpetuating the trend for financial gain. Ick.
