About this listen
Action Adventure, MMMSouth Africa, 2073 A.D. was cold, dark, and barren like Antarctica. Nothing should be able to survive in the Brawl’s nest, but Eryn and his brothers did.
Eryn’s deep connection to both his frog family and the humans led him to use his empathic power to ensure the cannibalistic frog monsters hibernate while the last civilization of humans is safe. He secretly observes the captivating firstborn twins in Phoenix and longs to join them. But, Eryn’s egg brother Ernest is a cunning psycho, more frog than man is hungry for human blood.
To save the humans and be free, he has to dispose of his frog nest, but he’s not a murderer. Thus, isolating himself, and making his life an indecisive, complicated mess.
This fast-paced rescue mission uncovers millennia-old secrets and the true origin of humans. Mika and Connor can’t understand their boys’ infatuation with Eryn. Maybe it’s Stockholm, but one thing’s for sure, Eryn’s double-dipping.
Just like sharing an ice cream, sharing comes naturally to Ivan and Cian.
Eryn, King of the Brawl, is the debut novel written by Kashel Char. This book and the New Beginnings series is a speculative, alternate history, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi fantasy featuring gifted DNA-manipulated paranormal beings falling in love. It is darkly complicated, with bouts of silliness, humor, and wonder.
Warning: This novel and the rest of the series contain explicit and graphic depictions of imprisonment, violence, blood, and gore. It is unsuitable for young and sensitive readers or anyone offended by gay sex. Re-edited authors’ choice. Wow!
Excellent world building!
There were a few things I could nitpick in the writing and narration both, but none come close to spoiling the listening experience or change my recommendation to you who read this.
The story is imaginative and inventive. The characters are interesting. The narration is nimble and skilled.
My favorite sci-fi action mystery thriller books (Michael Crichton, James Rollins) contain just enough real science to make the fanciful fiction seem plausible. I found bits of that same flavor scattered throughout this book. I went in blind with a new author and am so glad I took the chance. After spending the past two or three days in this world, I am enjoying it enough to want to dive right into the next book.
If you’re interested enough to be reading the reviews, yes, grab this listen! I think you’ll be glad you did.

This book had everything
I loved this book! It started strong and fast paced and never let up. I love science fiction so finding such a great a book in this genre that’s also spicy… it’s a win! If you read the prequel you get lots of questions answered and so much info but not in a dump and run fashion. Each book has ended in a HFN way but enticing you to start the next one. I’m very excited to start Cian’s song! The narrator also did a wonderful job.

I’m so glad I started this series it’s very batty but in a good way. You should go in open minded. It is rough, dark and strangely entertaining, I’m hooked.

Excellent start to a MM science fiction series.
The first book in Kashel Char’s New Beginnings M/M series, Eryn, King of the Brawl, is an absolute five-star gem. As a debut novel, Char shines in crafting a rich blend of science fiction and fantasy, creating a world that’s not only immersive but one you’ll wish you could step into. The world-building is detailed and sophisticated, from the unique species and cultures to the vivid landscapes, all of which make this universe feel fully realized. Every setting feels alive, and Char’s deft touch at world-building keeps the pacing lively and fast-paced—never a dull moment.
Eryn, a frog/human hybrid, embarks on a daring rescue mission that brings him into contact with the twin brothers Ivan and Cian. The bonds that form between them are heartwarming and layered with emotional depth. Eryn is complex: though he’s lonely and naïve, his growth is both poignant and believable. As he slowly sheds his innocence, he becomes an indispensable part of the group, offering insights and uncovering truths that turn the plot on its head. His naivety isn't a weakness—it's a gateway for deeper emotional exploration and the unfolding of a fascinating journey.
What stands out in this debut is Char's ability to flesh out a diverse array of characters, each with their own motivations, quirks, and backstories. These layers make the stakes feel all the more real, and I found myself eagerly flipping pages to see what would happen next.
I also want to highlight the audiobook experience, which added an extra layer of richness to the story. Listening while reading the eBook, I was struck by Jonathan Waters’ brilliant narration. He gave each character a unique voice, and his skill with a large cast of diverse personalities truly felt like a full-cast performance. Waters didn’t just read the story—he brought it to life, adding emotional depth and nuance to every scene.
With such a strong debut, I’m excited to see where Kashel Char takes this series next. Eryn, King of the Brawl is a captivating start that promises even greater things to come. If you’re a fan of science fiction and fantasy, or simply looking for a well-crafted, character-driven story, this book is one you won’t want to miss.
