Publisher's summary

The biggest thriller of the year: A history-making eruption is about to destroy the Big Island of Hawaii. But a secret held for decades by the US military is far more terrifying than any volcano.

“The book is a classic summer beach read...Eruption will revive the art of speed-reading...told with a singular voice that is a compelling amalgam of the two writers.”—USA Today

Eruption is an epic thriller…fast-paced and deeply considered…a cinematic story rooted in science and infused with plenty of heart, tackling big themes like love and loss.”–Time

The master of the techno-blockbuster joins forces with the master of the modern thriller to create the most anticipated mega bestseller in years.

Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

“Red-hot storytelling... The action scenes will make readers’ eyes pop as the tension continues to build."–Kirkus, starred review

“Explosive…the summer’s ultimate literary mashup.”—Washington Post

"Takes readers on a thrilling journey."—BBC

"Beachbag-ready."—Boston Globe

“A seismic publishing event…all the elements of a summer blockbuster…it’s a thrill and the pages practically turn themselves.”—Associated Press

Eruption is this summer’s literary version of a blockbuster action movie.”–Los Angeles Times

"Breakneck and plausible."—Publishers Weekly

Critic reviews

Eruption is this summer’s literary version of a blockbuster action movie.”—Los Angeles Times
“Pulse-pounding … the heartbreaking climax and satisfying style are what listeners have come to expect from these two masters of the genre.”—AudioFile
Eruption is so much more than just a great summer read. It combines the impeccable research and scientific knowledge that Crichton consistently infused into everything he wrote with the breakneck suspense of a James Patterson novel… A wild ride that takes no prisoners.”—Bookreporter

I might stop

The story is pretty good so far. It's not a page turner but it's entertaining enough. My issue is the narrator is insufferable. Imagine finding the most dramatic middle school girl ever and having that person read a book right after their boyfriend broke up with them via text message. That's pretty much the level of unnecessary drama you're getting with the guy reading the book.

Also, any time someone poses a question, the narrator uses the "are you an idiot?" voice. It's the voice people use when they ask someone a question, but in reality, they're saying, "do I really need to ask this?" "Are you an idiot?" You'll. know. it. when. you. hear. it...

Basically, ask every question by slowly over pronouncing every word and drawing them out so a sentence that might take 2 seconds to speak will now take 6 seconds.

Anyway, I'm at the point where I might not be interested enough in the story to continue. We'll see.

Fun story, terrible narrator

I love Michael Crichton. Unfortunately Scott Brick’s narrating was a disaster. I find his delivery to be falsely emotional and overheated - in a word, unbearable. I stopped listening to Jack Reacher audiobooks when Mr. Brick began narrating them. I would never have purchased Eruption had I realized Mr. Brick was doing the reading. I never thought I’d say this but I think an AI voice would have been an improvement.

performance to dramatic

The reader of this book was far too dramatic and angry through the whole book, which was very very tiresome.

One last time

Michael Crichton was truly one of those special people. We all get to enjoy his work one last time with the assistance of James Paterson. This book has all of the excitement and attention to detail you expect from a Crichton book. I can totally imagine this making it to the big screen, like all of his past works I had this movie like experience running through my mind when listening. This is a must have for any Michael Crichton fan!

Sputters to a conclusion

The first 50% to 60% of the book is compelling and has the interesting cast of characters you might expect from any Crichton book. But it just starts to run out of steam all the way to the end. (Is that the Patterson part?) Really disappointing after such a great start.

Good book

Eruption

Michael Crichton & James Patterson

I am glad I read this book, and I found it interesting. The authors did their research so learning about volcanoes was interesting. I did believe the reflective moments by the characters was a little overplayed and took from the story somewhat, perhaps being used as filler. The narrator for the audiobook was also pretty overly dramatic. Other than that it was enjoyable. It is great that James Patterson finished the project for Michael Crichton. That alone made it worth it.

Scientific Thriller With Lots of Twist and Turns

The story was well researched and the twist that takes place about a 3rd into the novel is gripping and changes the direction completely. As an audio listener, Brick was not great due to the sports-casing and movie preview voice tones; I would recommend at lessening at 1.25 listening speed.

The character development was choppy and disconnected. I found myself getting lost multiple times.

Still a decent novel, but not the best of Michael Crichton.

volcanos are great subject material

the reader is horrible. It sounds like he's having a stroke. Give me R.C.Bray any day of the week.

Crichton Honored

I really did not care for the performance, but he could not take away from this book. I LOVE Michael Crichton books, and I never lost his vibe the entire time. Excellent.

I wanted to like this book

I was hoping this would be a great book. I’ve enjoyed many of Michael Crichton’s books in the past. This just wasn’t one of those.
