About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The audiobook of Equal Rites is narrated by Indira Varma (Game of Thrones; Luther; This Way Up). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.'

Everybody knows there's no such thing as a female wizard. So when the wizard Drum Billet accidentally passes on his staff of power to an eighth daughter of an eighth son, a girl called Eskarina (Esk, for short), the misogynistic world of wizardry wants nothing to do with her.

Thankfully Granny Weatherwax, the Discworld's most famous witch, has plenty of experience ignoring the status quo. With Granny's help, Esk sneaks her way into the magical Unseen University and befriends apprentice wizard Simon.

But power is unpredictable, and these bright young students soon find themselves in a whole new dimension of trouble. Let the battle of the sexes begin....

Equal Rites is the first book in the Witches series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.

The first book in the Discworld series – The Colour of Magic – was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Good narration

I’m a huge fan of Terry Pratchett and like to listen to his books over and over. I’m so glad to hear another version of this book. This narrator did a much better job with the male voices. Too many female narrators overdo it and sound clownish. She also didn’t make the eating noises that the last narrator did. Thank you for that!

Huge improvement in narration!

So much better than the Celia Imrie narrated one. Not my favorite Discworld story, but still a lot of really interesting parts and poignant, funny observations as always with STP.

Indra Varma does such a superb job, I look forward to repeat listens finally!

Wonderful start

This was my first book into the Disc World and it was a great start. Indira’s narration was superb and completely immersed me into the story. On to Wyrd Sisters with the same narrator.

Great narrator

Love this narrator and like this story. It’s adolescent and mature at the same time.

Why say the tittle is optional if it's not?

A wonderful book with a wonderful performance, though sometimes Esk's Voice blends with Granny's when she's being particularly witty.

Excellent

Though I’m still partial to the older disc world recordings, the new line is excellent. Strong voice work and production quality.

Good Read

Pratchett’s descriptive writing and constant humorous witticism are in a league of their own. This book like others have read by him paint exquisite pictures and provide abundant laughs.
