Publisher's summary

We aren't alone. The enemies are already here ... beneath our feet.

Beneath the surface a war rages between the surviving demons still inhabiting the Earth and those few, the initiated, who fight to keep it buried deep where it belongs in the darkest shadows.

Troy Odell was doing what he did best, taking the fight to the enemies of the free world. No two missions were ever the same, but he never expected his world to turn so violently upside down as it did. The only surviving member of his team of US Marine Raiders, he finds himself drawn into that secret battle.

Adapting to his new reality, Odell must find his place in that new world and come to terms with not only the truth about the world but where he fits in it. Fighting enemies he though only existed in movies, Odell soon learns that his side of that secret war is vastly unprepared for what is to come.

Don't miss the start of this new action-packed series from Devon C. Ford, bestselling author of After It Happened. Filled with his patented, gritty military action and monstrous horrors, it's perfect for fans of Jason Anspach, Larry Correia, Gears of War, and Nicholas Sansbury Smith's Hell Divers.

Neat

Thought the whole thing was a good time, no super notable emotional payoffs save one that's been back burnered for the whole book.

Great story

This was a great first-in-series book, with hopefully many more sequels to come. Good character development, suspense and fun monster times which was well narrated with great individual voice inflections!

Layers

Very intriguing story. Gives you just enough but also let's you know that there's a LOT MORE to come. I love the character and world building. Highly anticipating the next in the series.

Reads like Jack Reacher but with monsters

Be warned, the cover art belies the slow pace of this book. Lots and lots of people talking. The pace does pick up finally in the third act, however. Hopefully this story is done with the “onboarding” of the main character and reader alike and can now move at an overall faster pace.

pretty good overall.

this book starts with an engagement that sticks with you the length of the book. it is what's most memorable from the entirety of the story. there is a lot of story building after the beginning setup which tends to drag on a bit. even with the slow pacing of the book throughout I ended up enjoying the story and looking forward to seeing where the author takes it in book two.

Hooked

Mr. Ford hooked me on this developing series. Mr. Ford provides his own version of “Monster Hunters International” in a well-written story with the appropriate level of foreshadowing and promise.

Not Monster Hunter International but a solid entry into the Genre

How character are introduced to us feels off (not literary critic here), incomplete maybe. Anyway I am following author from other series that I think were superb and expect this one will get better now that the world and major characters have been introduced. He did end with questions yet to be answered which makes hunger for the one.
