Emily, a lonely, misunderstood young girl, yearns for love and acceptance, and doesn't quite fit in and is too naive and headstrong for her own good. She finds her way through adolescence as she makes friends with Teddy - a budding artist; Isle - an outstanding reciter; and Perry - a hired boy who is destined for great things; and discovers her passion for poetry and writing while writing letters to her late father on hidden-away letter-bills.

Although LM Montgomery uses the plight of another orphan to explore relationships, this is not a novel quite like Anne of Green Gables. Emily is surrounded by family, and deep ties to the past. Emily matures through observations and experiences and relationships.

The narration is done in a style that is dignified and enjoyable.
