Publisher's summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north in this “incredibly fun journey through fae lands and dark magic” (NPR), the start of a heartwarming and enchanting new fantasy series.

“A darkly gorgeous fantasy that sparkles with snow and magic.”—Sangu Mandanna, author of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches

LOCUS AWARD FINALIST • A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR:
The New York Times Book Review, NPR, PopSugar, Polygon, The Globe and Mail, She Reads

Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party—or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people.

So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, muddle Emily’s research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.

But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones—the most elusive of all faeries—lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she’ll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all—her own heart.

Critic reviews

“An incredibly fun journey through fae lands and dark magic”—NPR

“A heartwarming spin on fantasy lore”POPSUGAR

“The world-building here is exquisite . . . and the characters are just as textured and richly drawn. This is the kind of forlorn, folkloric fantasy that remembers the old, blood-ribboned source material about sacrifices and stolen children, but adds a modern gloss.”—“Sizzling Hot Books for Cold Winter Days,” The New York Times Book Review

Fantastic!

I got the audiobook and really did enjoy the narration. The story is amazing, I can’t stop talking about it to all the people I know and it’s a bit sad that there isn’t enough time for the fandom to have formed yet as I really want to dive into this world with other people.
If you like Howls Moving Castle and.. in case you are an ASD woman like me you’ll definitely see yourself in quite a lot of Emily xD

Overall Good Story

The beginning was a little slow, I felt like I was having a history lesson. After the first part it flowed well and I really enjoyed the book.

Great Fantasy Escape

I love everything about this audible book: characters, setting(s), details of description, use of language(s), style of storytelling and stories within the main narrative, quests, humor, and especially the wonderful narration--this is meant to be read aloud, The performance is a rich enhancement to the experience.

Although I don't regularly read Fantasy, Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries will rank as a classic, I'm certain. This book is an argument as to the healing potential of the Fantasy genre. If you are going through a stressful time, you may find that you pick up one book after another but nothing grabs you. Emily Wilde, however, will draw you into such an all-absorbing world of new problem-solving, beloved characters including her big dog Shadow and of course Wendell, and brilliantly pictured winter scenes that you will leave your old baggage behind and follow along in and out of the world of Fae.

In Audible or in the hard copy of a book as in the world of Faeries, time can fortunately be rewound. Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries Book 1 is worth listening to a second or third time. I hope that there will be a Book 2 soon.

A clever & fun adventure into a magical world

This book is a complete page turner, I never wanted to turn it off. Em’s adventures are unpredictable and entertaining. You easily fall in love with the characters! Wendell is by far on of my favorite love interests to date, handsome funny and so much more! This book leaves you wanting more without to much of a cliffhanger. I found Em very down to earth and relatable. I would definitely recommend! I cannot wait for the next book!

My New Favorite

LOVES:
I mean, this book is VIBES. The performance was beautiful and witty. I loved Emily’s personality although I know some people don’t. It is such a cozy late fall/winter read. Again, historical fiction/romance/fantasy/fade to black. Although this read is not action packed, it is a mystery and I felt compelled by the majority of the story.

DISLIKES:
The description of Bambleby was not great. He was described to be not much older than Emily, but his personality made me picture him to be an old man. Later in the book he got better, but it still made me feel like he was some old leathery professor.
SPOILER:

The ending didn’t help when he was turned into somewhat of an ugly character and Emily likes that face better? It seemed rather pick me.

If you like the writing style of Austen, Hardy, etc. and like more snooty writing, you will love this book. Classic english humor!

wonderful!

It's been at least 12 years since I've found a book that has sucked me in and made me escape reality. I feel like I got to know the characters personally. I almost feel like it's a memory of my own. I am so excited to find out there is a 2nd book coming! I'll be waiting until then!
