About this listen

This is the story of a beautiful, young woman — a talented athlete and musician, raised in a loving home, surrounded by friends — undermined by a ruthless inner voice that claimed her body and her spirit. Emilee: The Story of a Girl and Her Family Hijacked by Anorexia reveals the cracks in our health care system, the institutions we are taught to trust, as well as our own prejudices and misinformation about eating disorders, mental illness, and addiction.

Through the use of parallel narrative, Linda and John Mazur provide an intimate and realistic account of how their world was turned upside down by anorexia nervosa. A must-listen for physicians, therapists, and social workers, or anyone who wants to learn more about how to respond more compassionately to families and patients caught in the web of this cruel disease.

A Necessary Read

To my shame, I initially found myself being a little critical of Linda and John's focus on their children's achievements. I later understood they were showing that even as a determined high achiever Emilee found the challenge of battling this frightening disease overwhelming. Thank you for bravely sharing your story, I can only imagine your fear and then your frustration trying to get help when doors were constantly being closed. in my attempt to learn more about this complex disease I also learnt about a familiy's selfless love. An important read.

This book needed a better editor

This is the heartbreaking story of losing a child to anorexia. It was undoubtedly extremely painful to write and my heart goes out to this family. I’d like to give this book more stars, but the pacing is terrible. Emilee has a self-published feel to it because it contains too many unnecessary details which drag down its powerful content.

Life Changing

I have read many memoirs about eating disorders. Emilee's story is the most memorable. I laughed and I cried. In fact, I stayed up all night to finish this audiobook, something I do rarely. This book captured me from Chapter 1.

This audiobook is special because her parents narrated it, and it includes some of Emilee's own words.

I commend the Mazurs for being open about many difficult topics. I found myself feeling angry at our medical and legal system, as they failed Emilee over and over. I was angry at insurance companies too.

It is clear from Emilee's story that there is much education to be done for society in general.

Editing aside, heart wrenching and important story

I initially was frustrated and distracted by editing and narration distractions, but I didn't mind during the last 40% of the book. I was too emotionally invested in the perspectives of both parents and Emilee. Be prepared to feel all of your feelings with this book.
As a behavioral health RN today, I am glad that in ways, it seems much has improved since 2016 regarding eating disorder recognition and treatment modalities. The struggle for access to treatment and insurance intricacies sound familiar, but also grey improved after

Thank you for sharing Emilee's story with the world. I agree that this is a story every medical proffessional should read.
