About this listen

From New York Times bestselling authors Andrews & Wilson

After surviving the most dangerous mission of his career, John Dempsey is back at Ember. But Ember has changed—and so has he. Meanwhile, a new adversary sees an opportunity to rise. As Dempsey and Vice President Jarvis soon discover, the world stage is about to get deadlier than ever …

To survive the notorious prison IK-2 and assassinate Russian President Vladimir Petrov, John Dempsey had to become rosomakha, the wolverine. Now, back home in America, he’s trying to put the pieces of his life at Ember back together. But which man returned from Russia—Dempsey, or the wolverine? From the way his teammates look at him, it’s obvious they’re not sure, and neither is he.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kelso Jarvis has barely had time to mourn the death of his mentor before a devastating attack reveals a new threat. Because of Dempsey's mission in Russia, the rules of the game have changed—only now it’s not clear who the players are. As Dempsey leads Ember on a mission to protect and avenge a shocking attack on America, Jarvis’s oath to his nation is tested in ways he never imagined. Together, they must determine who is behind this rising threat and stop the mastermind before it’s too late.

And just as Dempsey begins to feel like himself again, an old ally resurfaces—someone he thought he’d left for dead long ago …

Brilliantly written characters and story

Ember reminded me why I fell in love with the Tier One books. The previous book was brilliant but it was awesome to have the group back. Munns humor, Grimes ‘mothering’, Baldwins analytical mind and Jarvis a reluctant hero. I am curious to see not only what happens with Dempsey’s son but also, I hope, the other Ember members. What can you say about Ray Porter’s narration. You can just sit back, listen and enjoy the ride. The story, is unfortunately, too real. With China, Russia, and Middle East there is no shortage of material for Andrews and Wilson.

Jack/John & Jake

First, I LOVE Ray Porter’s character voices. Well done yet again sir. As far as the storyline goes, I’m a sucker for these spec-op books and this one did not disappoint ! What sets this book apart though is John and his son, Jake. The duality of emotions they both share for obviously different reasons, but their undying draw (especially Jake’s) to reunite (even though Jack is ”dead”) rips my heart out. As a father of two strong, young sons. I couldn’t imagine the conflicting pulls Jack had to have felt waking up in the airplane in book one.

To Andrews and Wilson: You guys BETTER NOT eff up their reunion. Regardless of how, their story has to end with love. I have all the faith in the world you won’t disappoint;)

The character development and their evolution continually adds depth to the series.

Another great installment in the Tier One series. Great narration as always. I already look forward to the next book!

Simply better than the others

Many great franchises within this genre. But these guys just simply do it better. Authenticity, action and character development. No doubt that Vince Flynn is the OG. But Wilson and Andrews in my opinion have met, or perhaps even surpassed the legend. Rare that not only the main character is so well developed, but you have huge emotional attachments and that feeling of familiarity with all the characters. Even the antagonist are written in such a way That you feel as if you get to know their innermost thoughts. Even the crossover between some of the spinoff franchises feels natural and unforced. And really nothing more to be said about the narrator Ray Porter. I listen to 50 to 70 audiobooks a year and he in my opinion is by far the best. The margin is massive. Well done guys, not sure if I’m more eagerly awaiting the next tier, one or men of valor. Thank you again for an extremely entertaining novel.

Timely But Dissappointing

Love the continued development of characters. Especially like the side plot of Jake Kemper. The plot/story was initially unexpected, compelling, emotional and intriguing. But the final outcome of the story was predictable and consequently a little flat. This Tier One story seemed unnecessarily unfinished to me. So what comes next for JD?

Solid adventure

Another Ember adventure finished. Now I have to wait until the next go around and see what kind of trouble JD can get into. Hopefully we get to see the father & son reunion.
