About this listen

The year is A.D. 922. A refined Arab courtier, representative of the powerful Caliph of Baghdad, encounters a party of Viking warriors who are journeying to the barbaric North. He is appalled by their Viking customs - the wanton sexuality of their pale, angular women, their disregard for cleanliness...their cold-blooded human sacrifices. But it is not until they reach the depths of the Northland that the courtier learns the horrifying and inescapable truth: he has been enlisted by these savage, inscrutable warriors to help combat a terror that plagues them - a monstrosity that emerges under cover of night to slaughter the Vikings and devour their flesh....

Eaters of the Dead was adapted to the screen as The 13th Warrior, starring Antonio Banderas.

What a tale

Simon Vance is the best narrator ever! He can make a good story great. Love Michael Crichton’s books. A really exciting tale of fantasy, sci-fi and adventure.

Great Book

Fantastic story with a slow start, it includes some historical sense as Michael Chrichton tends to do.

A Must Read

Crichton at his best, read by an impeccable narrator. Wholly entertaining and absolute fun.

Brilliant

I wasn't sure at first that I would like the "journal" style of this book, but I soon realized that it was perfect and creative way for Crichton to present the story, especially since the opening chapters are a re-working of an actual historic journal. Simon Vance, as always, did a wonderful job.

Not his best work

An OK listen. Nothing earth-shattering.

The story is told like a Koran reading, very declarative and droll. Crichton's faux academic investigation, (whether false or not) is not very convincing. He's either genuinely making a case for Neanderthal late existence or he is faking it. Either way it feels fraudulent, Piltdown man-like.

Nonetheless the cover has the author's name in bigger letters than the title of the book, so we all know it must be good right?

Spectacular

Brilliantly conceived and executed. It's easy to cross the line here between reality and fiction.

Timeless story, with great narration

Scott Brick is brilliant, he could read the dictionary and make it sound good. For those saying negative things about the book. Ok, it isn't the movie, but it is still a great work of art. It is expressive and a timeless story with great narration.
