Awesome

Such a joy. I’ve been a fan of Anne McCaffrey since I read the first magazine extract in a doctors waiting room. This is a fabulous story of a very impish young man who reputation for mischief gets him into many scrapes. Fabulous. Highly recommend this book.

enchanting and mischievious

A wonderful look deeper into the workings of the Harper Hall. Combine this with antics of the young Harper, Piemur, one is kept on the edge of your seat. Hated to see it end, and so I search for the next book.

Great story, plenty of action

In this third book of the Harper Hall series of the Pern novels, Dragondrums, Menolly’s friend Piemur suddenly fears for his position in the Harper Hall. His voice is changing, and he does not know if he will be sent home because he can no longer sing.

This is a great story with plenty of action. Piemur is a great if unexpected, character.

Master Harper Robinton suspects that the notorious scamp can be made useful, however. He has him assigned to the Drum Tower to learn the various drum messages used to carry information on Pern. Piemur is warned that he needs to work hard and stay out of trouble, or the drum master may want to get rid of him.

The drum master is not so much of a problem, and Piemur, afraid of being sent away from the Hall, works hard and learns all the drum cadences he is set to work on very quickly. But the other apprentices a) don’t like him and/or b) are afraid he will somehow cause them to lose their places. They treat him very badly, to the point where their supposed practical jokes endanger his life.

On hearing of this, Master Robinton begins to send him out on the type of missions he has envisioned for Piemur – gathering information on the goings-on at the various holds and weyrs. He succeeds beyond anybody’s wildest dreams, but again it almost costs him his life. He does finally get his own fire lizard out of the deal, however.

Rollicking good yarn

This scamp curves his way across the whole planet. Nosey, quiet, lazer-target gossiper, only discovers his calling when he drops into the jungle to sink or swim.
