About this listen

Dragon Ship is a stirring space adventure from master storytellers Sharon Lee and Steve Miller - number 15 in the award-winning Liaden Universe saga. Space ships, action, adventure - all tied together with a strong dollop of romance and intrigue - make this a compelling series for a wide range of readers, from romance to military-SF lovers.

First Class Courier Pilot Theo Waitley was already known as a nexus of violence - and then she inherited the precarious captaincy of a mysterious self-aware ship designed to serve a long dead trader. Now she has a trade route to run for Clan Korval while she convinces the near-mythic ghost ship Bechimo - and herself - that she wants to commit herself as the human side to their immensely powerful symbiosis. While her former lover battles a nanovirus that's eating him alive, she's challenged to rescue hundreds of stranded pilots and crewmen from an explosive situation in near orbit around a suddenly hostile planet. Lovers, enemies, an ex-roomie, and a jealous spaceship are all in peril as Theo wields power that no one in the universe is sure of - especially her.

great story, mediocre performance

the storyline is great, well written, and exciting.

the reader's performance, however, leaves much to be desired. So many misspeaks, mispronounciations, and badly processed audio patches! The reader seems to default to a monotone ending to each phrase, which makes the flow seem a halting collection of sentence fragments.

Building a good story to a great one

I love all of the Liaden titles, but this one is winding an amazing number of strands toward a grand climax. Theo's story could be stand alone, though having read the others deepens the background and adds to the richness. I have read them all in print, so my listening to Dragon Ship was a wonderful re-visit, and I felt all the same delight as on my first reading. I do find that listening to a book expands the book. One hears bits that the eye may skip over. The reading was very good, with just a couple of words that the reader was not familiar with. I always find that a bit jarring. They were not "strange" words from the Liaden Universe, rather normal English words. I eagerly await the next step in the overall plot, and heartily recommend this title.

The continuing story

Entertaining look into a developing a personality. The ship is learning to be human.Captain is always within her perfectionist contrary shelf.

Love these books

This is a great book. The Liaden Universe never disappoints. Theo is an interesting addition because she lacks the self-assurance commonly found in Korval. The contrast between this character and her fellows of the line, highlights how growing up under tree shapes the dragons. The similarities show the traits which even Delgado couldn't beat out of a member of Korval. It's a case study in nature vs. nurture Korval style. And the writing is as energetic and witty as ever. Theo's storyline is definitely worth the time investment.

More great Liaden adventure

Theo Waitley and her self-aware ship Bechimo now have a contract with Clan Korval to explore a possible new long-loop trade route, unconnected to previous Korval routes that included Liad. She's got her first crew member, pilot Clarence O'Berin. And she and Bechimo are feeling out the delicate matter of whether he and Theo really want to enter into the symbiosis that would make Theo not acting captain but bonded captain.

So we know things are way too peaceful and some real excitement is going to come along and smack them all.

The world of Eylot, where Theo attended Anlingdon Piloting Academy, has continued to grow more and more insular in the few years since Theo was kickedGui out after being declared a "nexus of violence." Now they're trying to declare all piloting licenses not issued on Eylot invalid, and to seize control of the Guild-run Codrescu Station. Since Eylot authorities have made clear their intention to "make examples" of pilots not trained at Anlingdon and even the Anlingdon-trained who have been too friendly with the offworlders, no one is eager to comply. The Guild declares a "Pilots in Peril" emergency--and Theo and Bechimo are the first to arrive.

Meanwhile, Kamele Waitley is sufficiently alarmed by Jen Sar Kiladi's disappearance and what little information that Theo has sent her about him. He's "safe within the parameters of an active pilot" and "with Korval." Is her onagrata being forced to act as a pilot for Korval? She's taken a sabbatical to "do research" that will take her to Surebleak to demand answers.

Naturally the Department of the Interior is still out to destroy Korval, and has not overlooked Theo--or her mother. There is much intrigue, action, close calls, and general excitement--all the while further developing the characters and the Liaden universe.

Lots of fun Recommended!

Excellent story and listening experience

Any additional comments?

Several reviews I read before downloading this book indicated it as not well done, this is not the case. An easy to follow and well done addition to the Theo Waitley series. Hope to hear more.

great book, but not for new to series

Love the Liaden universe! Wonderful Segway in Theo storyline. But not a starting place for new to series.
