About this listen

Meet the vampires who started it all - the original Count Dracula and his older female counterpart Carmilla - brought to thrilling new life by award-winning narrators Clive Hayward and Alison Larkin.

The book about Le Fanu’s tortured, powerful female vampire, Carmilla, has been terrifying generations with its themes of lesbian attraction and forbidden, dangerous desires. Carmilla inspired Bram Stoker to create his own vampire classic 26 years later. Now, these two blood-chilling tales are brought together in this brilliant recording followed by a fascinating interview in which Hayward and Larkin talk about their process and reactions to the stories, straight from the London recording studio.

Critic reviews

"Alison Larkin's crystalline tone transmutes as needed from young English girl to old European man, and her pacing transforms the old-fashioned sentences into easy listening while maintaining tension. Clive Hayward's performance of the tightly plotted Dracula is a tour de force of clear narration, ratcheting up anxiety, and astonishing characterizations of everyone from English country gal to the Vlad himself. Do not miss the postproduction chat between Larkin and Hayward, which adds to the production's many pleasures." (AudioFile Magazine; AudioFile Earphones Award winner)

Excellent rendition of Dracula

This is a lovely reading of Dracula. The original text is classic literature, and one of the great works of modern mythology. The narrator is clear and well-spoken.

This was a great way to pass my commute. Definitely recommended.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

both stories we're good

Dracula was very good and it was interesting oh how it was wrote.
Carmella was ok, I heard that there was supposed to be some girl on girl love seen, but I didn't hear it in this recording. maybe it was though and I just didn't think it was as had as people say it was too. I'll let someone else correct me on that.
I did like the little chat between the two readers though at the end, fun to hear people discuss the books you read.

Nothing short of brilliant

I LOVED Clive Hayward's narration of Frankenstein and the Rime of the Ancient Mariner with commentary from Alison Larkin and I loved Dracula and Carmilla even more. Once again Hayward's narration draws you in character by character and the famous tale comes to life in his hands - his portrayal of Dracula is bone chilling and every other character is clearly defined. As for Carmilla, the shorter book that follows read by Alison Larkin, well it's really powerful. I had no idea that Carmilla was written first and her story is just fantastic as is Larkin's narration. Subtle, powerful, haunting are words that come t omind. There's commentary from Alison Larkin - never too much, just enough to leave you wanting more. And I do. More!!! OUTSTANDING! Such a treat to listen to an audiobook of this quality in today's world. BRAVO!

A must listen!!!!

Dracula has been on my to read list since I was young and I just never seemed to get around to it. Now I'm glad I didn't because Clive Hayward's narration was absolutely spectacular an was truely the best way to hear the book for the first time. (His voices are so good!!!) Actually I had to restart the book when I was 6 hours in because my boyfriend came in the kitchen while I was listening and found it so interesting the he asked me to restart it so we could listen to the whole thing together. We both agreed it was fantastic and decided when he gets back from being away at work we want to get his narration of Frankenstein to listen to next. ( We've listen to audiobooks separately before but this book is the first one we've done together and I'm thrilled its started a new couples thing for us to do!)

Carmilla wasn't as good of a story in our opinion it's much slower and grabs your attention less. It may have been better had it not immediately followed Dracula which was just soo very good. I've still given this audiobook a 5 star because it's more than worth it's cost for just Dracula alone. I really cannot praise it enough. I did receive a copy of this book for free in exchange for and honest review. It did not however influence my review at all and all opinions are my own and those of my boyfriend.
