About this listen
After a raucous night, Red, a Newport Beach dory fisherman, ventures into the open ocean to fish for the morning fish market on the beach. Running late in the pre-dawn, he ponders his life as he motors out to the Newport Trench off the Southern California coast to set his deep lines. While trolling with his surface lines, he resolves to get his life in order. Then, strong Santa Ana winds blow in, disturbing the sea, adding to Red’s difficulties.

A Meditation and Wishful Thinking
If you want to sit back, relax, and listen to someone you'll likely never meet reflect on his hard life and be lured in by the intrigue of how this meditation will play out, this is for you. Red, a down on his luck fisherman, among other jobs, sets out one morning to secure his day's catch. Along the way we learn about Red's hard life and misfortunes and his plans for the future all the while experiencing what has been his undoing all along. The pace of the story is strong and we are kept intrigued by how this will all end. Soon enough we learn. Two thumbs up for the story, the pacing, and the presentation.

Relaxing (J)
Great storyline, very relaxing. A fisherman named Red goes out catches fish to prepare for the market in the morning. Amazing narrator and also it feels as if you are drifting away from such a relaxing story. Amazing story.

Just another bottle of vodka.
The author did a great job of allowing us to get inside Red’s head. Red, unfortunately, is just another example of a practicing alcoholic dreaming of a better life and succumbing to life’s pitfalls.

No one to blame
I really enjoyed the story of the Doryman. I listened to it twice to really absorb the details of the intended foreshadowing. I also felt there was foreshadowing with him tossing his cigarette in the ocean, as he also threw his life away because of a lifetime of poor choices.

Inside a Fisherman’s Mind
Well narrated short story that gives a sorrowful glimpse into Red’s struggle with his life’s disappointments and his dreams that always seem to be just out of reach. He lives for pleasure but in that pursuit, he ultimately invites nothing but pain.
