Publisher's summary

Between getting into a tangle with a corrupt local judge and discovering a disturbing black-market business, Dr. Siri and his friend Inspector Phosy have their hands full in the 13th installment of Colin Cotterill's quirky, critically acclaimed series.

Dr. Siri Paiboun, the ex-national coroner of Laos, may have more experience dissecting bodies than making art, but when he manages to smuggle a fancy movie camera into the country he devises a plan to shoot a Lao adaptation of War and Peace with his friend Civilai. The only problem? The Ministry of Culture must approve the script before they can get rolling. That and they can't figure out how to turn on the camera.

Meanwhile, the skeleton of a woman has appeared under the Anusawari Arch in the middle of the night. Siri puts his directorial debut on hold and assists his friend, the newly promoted Senior Police Inspector Phosy Vongvichai, with the ensuing investigation. Though the death of the unknown woman seems to be recent, the flesh on her corpse has been picked off in places as if something - or someone - has been gnawing on the bones. The plot Phosy soon uncovers involves much more than single set of skeletal remains.

Another great one

Such a great story and so perfectly read. Loved every minute. I’ve learned so much of Laotian history, as well.

The best Dr. Siri yet!

I tried the first in the series simply because it was a mystery & was included with my membership. After that I was hooked, and listened to one after another. It's a series best listened to in sequence, watching the characters grow and evolve. There's much dry wit, and a 5-star narration as the story lines converge & mysteries are solved. The character development is wonderful, bringing these wonderful people into our minds and hearts forever. As a bonus, we're given a history of the 1970s post-war era from the prospective of the countries where it was waged, and a chance to get to know their inhabitants as people rather than combatants. I love these books!

A tale of tails!

I’m impressed with this cozy mystery series. It’s well written and includes timeless ideals about everything that makes us human. I’ve been lucky enough to purchase all of this series and I’m always happy to recommend these tomes to people that enjoy reading wonderful books.

Dr. Siri Paiboun my love

This series of books is one of the best I have ever experienced. The writer has captured humanity at its finest and at its worst but in the most beautiful way. You will fall in love with Dr. Siri and his band of friends as they grow and learn to navigate life and adventures together, solve crimes, and enlighten themselves and the reader. I am in love with Dr. Siri the ancient pathologist-crime fighter. We should all aspire to be so wonderful. Thank you to Colin Cotterill for sharing your friends with us.

One of the best for Mr Cotterill

An exciting chapter in what one always hopes will be an ongoing adventure. The social critique is mordant- see E Warren End Corruption 🙏

Fallen in love

I have fallen in love with this author and with his characters. I have described these books as Three Pines meets Three Stooges. Always a delightful story.

My least favorite Dr. Siri book

I absolutely adore Dr. Siri and his cohorts. I listen to these books repeatedly, and with great pleasure. Except for this one. For whatever reason, this book seems far darker and more depressing than the others. I skip over it whenever I binge-listen to the series. As always, Mr. Chafer does a marvelous job narrating this book. I just wish the story was less creepy.
