Publisher's summary

Lamar Pye has escaped from Oklahoma State Penitentiary, accompanied by his idiot cousin and a vicious but cowardly artist. To have stayed in prison was certain death, but his chances on the outside are not much greater: his excesses know no bounds - one killing follows another. But one murder brings his nemesis upon him: Bud Pewtie of the Highway Patrol loses his partner in a blood-soaked shoot-out with Lamar, and from that moment on, nothing will stop him from getting even.

Hunter at his best.

loved it. Great story. Lots of action, gun fights, ass whoopings, sex, etcetera. A story written by a man for men

Great

Ah the time before writers broke their books down in to small parts to make more money. Great book and narration. Well worth the price.

If you can take the violence, it's good.

This book definitely had a serious theme, so it's not for the faint of heart. But the author weaves a good tale with strong character development that draws you in to the motivation of the story.
Recommend if you can take a fair share of violence.

I ALMOST stopped listening because of the.....

filthy language and descriptive terms.... BUT, it IS set in a prison (initially) with characters that are prison fodder and so therefore plodded on, encouraged by the good reviews.
If you can get past this initial baptism by fire; you will be rewarded and start living in minds of these characters, with all the racial epithets and language.
Redeeming was the amazing writing and storyline! It was as good as being on a rollercoaster ride at Six Flags! The many twists and turns and double-backs, it was a dizzying listen. The language and subjects are not for the faint-hearted with descriptive physical attributes of prison men, their tendencies, gang language, and gory descriptive gunshot battles and aftermath just to name a few.
It was never boring, kept me in the story to the very end, and when finishing it in the parking lot at Hobby Lobby, I got out and said "PHEW, that was something!"

The narration was spot on with just enough differences among the voicing that was excellent but not overtly dramatized. A great feat considering the situations presented!

I will definitely be looking for another Stephen Hunter book with Eric Dove narration!

Great Book!

This was such a great book. I don't know how I stumbled onto it, but I sure enjoyed it. Not only was the story excellent, but the narration was perfect as well. I recommend this entertaining gem.

Superlative

Wonderfully written. Narration truly spectacular. Several steps beyond the typical thriller. Not for the faint of heart, however!

You will never guess the end!

I thoroughly enjoyed this read! This was my first time reading something by this author and boy did he deliver. The characters have depth and are well developed. I felt like I was in Oklahoma Traveling the road that the character’s traveled! The author does a great job keeping you at the edge of your seat. I highly recommend it!

Very engaging storyline, even unpredictable .

Great character development and unpredictable story. Maybe an bit too wordy at times. Great narration adding suspense to the storytelling.
