Publisher's summary

The New York Times Bestseller

Fear. Grief. Loss. Betrayal. Rachel Hollis has felt all those things, and she knows you have too. Now, she takes you to the other side.

With her signature humor, heartfelt honesty, and intimate true-life stories, #1 New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hollis shows listeners how to seize difficult moments for the learning experiences they are and the value and growth they provide.

Rachel Hollis sees you. As the millions who listened to her #1 New York Times bestsellers Girl, Wash Your Face and Girl, Stop Apologizing, attend her RISE conferences and follow her on social media know, she also wants to see you transform.

When it comes to the “hard seasons” of life—the death of a loved one, divorce, loss of a job—transformation seems impossible when grief and uncertainty dominate your days. Especially when, as Didn’t See that Coming reveals, no one asks to have their future completely rearranged for them. But, as Rachel writes, it is up to you how you come through your pain—you can come through changed for the better, having learned and grown, or stuck in place where your identity becomes rooted in what hurt you.

To Rachel, a life well-lived is one of purpose, focused only on the essentials. This is a small book about big feelings: inspirational, aspirational, and an anchor that shows that darkness can co-exist with the beautiful.

Better than I thought it would be...

I had just experienced a traumatic life event and this book showed up at the right time, for me. Although I've always had a knack for overcoming and navigating life's obstacles, this time, I needed a little help. There was only one time when I rolled my eyes and only once when I couldn't relate to an analogy used, but I still understood the point she was trying to make. I appreciated the realness and honesty! I am listening to it again, and suspect it may be my new 'go to' when I need to hear some real life, pull up your pants and don't give up messages. Thank you for this book! Its already been a blessing to me.

thank you

I laughed, I cried, and I learned. I was reminded to give myself grace in this season but also got the kick in the butt I ultimately needed. Once again, Thank you Rachel, for your honesty and vulnerability.

Too much time spent on her personal life.

Although I understand why an author would include personal stories and anecdotes to make a point and to teach, her personal stories were way too long. Sharing her personal life took up way too much time in such a short book. I think she could have told her stories in a more abbreviated fashion, rather than giving us every detail and creating such dramatic storylines- about her life. That being said, I did enjoy the book, and I got a lot out of it, as I am going through a divorce right now. Very helpful!

Just as great as the rest of Rachel’s books!

I would totally recommend this book to anyone who’s read and loved the other books she’s written! It’s a real eye opener so to speak on life and struggles you may go through or even how to feel about others going through things you can’t even comprehend and an idea how to handle it personally.

My favorite Rachel Hollis book yet

I wish this book existed when I first went through divorce. Even though that was several years ago and I'm in a good spot in life now, this book is still has many great reminders on living life.

Brilliant

I have to admit I was not sure at the start of this one. Yet, my faith in Rachel to bring that point home that I needed to hear had me holding on all the way. By the end I had heard things that made me laugh, cry, and empathize with. At the end I believe I am more hopeful for my own future than I ever have been. Thank you.
