Acerca de esta escucha

Someone’s found the skeleton in the closet, and it’s not the only one. Wall Street Journal bestselling author Debra Webb presents an emotional new mystery.

Crime analyst and newly disgraced deputy police chief Vera Boyett doesn’t visit home often, and she certainly doesn’t venture back into the cave on her family land. But when the remains of her long-missing stepmother are discovered, Vera will have to face a past that threatens all she is.

She and her sister Eve had a fairy-tale childhood: good until it was tragic, with a stepmother they never found a bond with. At least they had each other, a baby half-sister, and a mutual devotion that would have them do the unthinkable.

It’s a summer in small-town Tennessee, so thick with humidity it could drown you and so rife with secrets it could smother you. And deep beneath the surface, there are more bodies than you’d think…

Reseñas de la Crítica

“A taut and gritty procedural with the promise of more.” Kirkus Reviews

“Expertly plotted and whip-smart, Deeper Than the Dead is an exceedingly clever crime thriller filled with secrets, betrayals, and complex characters. Webb manages to hit that sweet spot between family drama and police procedural. This one is sure to be a hit in the crime thriller genre. A wild and massively entertaining ride.” —Christina McDonald, USA Today bestselling author

Overall very good but the heroine can drive you crazy with how spontaneous and stupid she acts

Very enjoyable

The writing is okay. it could have been a lot shorter. The constant build up of tension in the relationships Coolio eye roll proportions. The narration was awful! She had so many awkward pauses that it became annoying quickly. I will avoid her in the future.

Terrible narration

The secrets people keep and the extent they'll go to keep them from being exposed. Loved this book and it was definitely a game of who did it.

Secrets always bring the worst out of people

There were some slow points in the book, and I found myself zoning out. I'd go back to reread/listen to what I'd missed, only to discover I hadn't missed anything of importance.

Vera, a criminologist, is home pending an investigation into a murder-suicide by two of her deputies. While home, the body of her father's second wife has been found in a cave along with three other bodies, and she assists the town sheriff, who is also her ex, in solving the case. Naturally, suspicions are directed at her family, but Vera refuses to see any blame brought on her family even though she and one of her two sisters are very complicit in the reason for one of the bodies being in the cave.

As the Deputy Chief of the Memphis Police Department, Vera has a great reputation that extends well into the other alphabet branches. However, it's hard to believe her reputation to be true when she's essentially playing a double agent as she assists her ex with solving the case involving the newly discovered bodies, one of which she's responsible for. According to her, her father and sister are without fault, and no amount of evidence can prove otherwise. While helping with the case, she has to constantly remind herself of who she is because even she knows she's wrong. OMG! Then, after all that reading/listening, the ending was horrible and rushed.

For me, this was another good book gone wrong. I'm a bit hesitant to read/listen to the next book in the series for that very reason.

Good book, but it could've been better.

Another enjoyable book by one of my favorite writers, Debra Webb. I have been a fan of her writings for some time. Her featured characters are easy to like with well-developed back stories. In 'Deeper Than the Dead,' Webb introduces a new character to the reader, Vera Boyett. Vera is from a small town in Alabama. An incident at her job in Memphis has brought her back home. Apparently, her reason for coming home is more troubling than the one she left behind. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of Vera Boyett investigations. The audible book performed by Elise Arsenault is excellent. -Mr.Bill

Elsie Arsenault does an excellent performance the book Deeper Than the Dead.

The story line was good. There were enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. But the lead female was whiny and for a crime analyst not very bright. I believe the characters could be sharpened.

Female Murderers?
