Set in 1898 Texas, this enthralling sequel to Gist's CBA best-selling Courting Trouble features an unlikely romance that's threatened by painful secrets and an angry lynch mob. Just when her romance with a wholesome newcomer begins to flourish, Essie learns her beau's true identity.

I usually give low star reviews for books that seem incomplete. However, when read with Courting Trouble, Deep in the Heart of Trouble, (which is actually the other half of the book and should have been published as one) is the best. The two become one excellent Historical Christian Romance and maybe more like a mainstream novel.
The two books make an excellent guide to young woman of 2020. It helps the Christian women to see regret before it arrive. Some character’s reaction to sin made me angry, but judging others always does. If you can only read one, read Deep in the Heart of Trouble. However, it won’t be the same without Courting Trouble background. I would prefer the two as one and I wish Deeanne Gist would add another in the series. Essie’s search for Mr. Wonderful (No spoiler) is worth the journey of both books.

It would have been better if the author had kept it more realistic to the era that the story is set in, rather than today. I mean this primarily in the area of what the main characters wear (always “bloomers” or some type of pants - though this would have been COMPLETELY unacceptable) and the women always MUST do things like men, which also would have been unacceptable during that time. The other part that I disliked was the past and present intimate relationships of the main character. Women during this era did NOT act that way. For all of those reasons and a few more, it was not a believable story. But it did pass the time, so I listened.
An okay story, with an “okay” narrator.
