About this listen

Portions of this audiobook contain mature language. Listener discretion is advised.

The My Fair Lady story gets a thoroughly modern, thoroughly invigorating update in this unsparing (and hilarious) look at America’s capitalist tech culture. Eli is a tough young woman who makes paper flowers on Venice Beach, where she lives in a homeless tent camp. A chance encounter with a smug tech CEO, Hig, sparks an intriguing quid pro quo: she brings him an image-burnishing entrepreneurial offer, and he, in turn, hires her to present GAL - his new artificial intelligence service - at an upcoming conference. The clash of cultures results in a surprisingly insightful exploration of the shady side of AI, sexism in the tech world, economic disparity, and the human cost of relentless progress.

Directed by Rachel Chavkin.

On Audible, We Abolish The Patriarchy

This story offers so many insights into what it means to be a woman today. I cried at the recognition of such truths and gained a deeper understanding of how I to move into a different socioeconomic strata while maintaining compassion and a sense of identification with all of most of us who are financially and existentially struggling every day. #TeamHuman #WomenDeserveSuccess

Cool listen …

Not what I was expecting. This was more like listening to a play than listening to a book. Took a minute for me to adjust and then I loved it. Quick listen, engaging story and really great actors.

Intriguing listen

I found this play interesting and well acted. The spunkiness and intelligence of the Eli character were fun to listen to.

Good short story well done.

Where’s the ending. Could have listens to this a few more hrs. Great work by the voices. Love the full cast short stories.

Riveting performance

I won’t be a spoiler but I can say the story took on expected turns. The writing and performance were both superb. My only criticism is that, if you’re looking for a more settling mood, this would not be the story for you.

Outstanding performances in a sci-fi play

Deep Fake is a science-fiction homage to the play, My Fair Lady. Audible has really pulled out all the stops in this Audible Originals performance under its amazing category, Arts & Entertainment, Entertainment & Performing Arts. This play is included free in the Premium Plus membership.

The script for this wonderful play is written by an award-winning playwright, and the play is directed by a Tony Award-winning director. The multicultural cast is packed with talented actors, and every one of them gives an outstanding performance. All in all, I really enjoyed this play, and I am definitely going to seek out other such performances on Audible in the future.

For my own information, I looked up all of the contributing artists, and I am including below a brief summary of what I found out about them for anyone who might also be interested:

Playwright: Sharyn Rothstein is an award-winning playwright and television writer. I was fascinated to learn that she was a writer and Consulting Producer for the USA hit legal drama Suits for five years, a series I watched faithfully and very much enjoyed every year it was on TV.

Director: Rachel Chavkin is a two-time Tony Award-nominated Broadway director for the musicals Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812 and Hadestown. She won the Tony for Hadestown in 2019.

Actors: Nidra Sous La Terre, Sanjit De Silva, Hannah Kallenbach, Blake DeLong, Ian Lassiter, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Sakina Jaffrey.

Nidra Sous La Terre is a Brooklyn-based, American actor who has an MFA in Acting from the Actors Studio Drama School.

Sanjit De Silva is a New York-based, Sri Lankan actor and director who received an MFA from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He is best known for his roles in The Company Men and American Desi.

Hannah Kallenbach is a Brooklyn-based, American actor and performance artist who also does stand-up.

Blake DeLong is a New York-based, American, film, television, and stage actor who is best known for originating the role of Andrey/Old Bolkonsky in the hit musical Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, directed by Rachel Chavkin.

Ian Lassiter is a New York-based, American actor who has performed both on and off Broadway for over a decade. He performed in the hit musical Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, directed by Rachel Chavkin. He is a member of the award winning, devised theatre group, The TEAM, whose Artistic Director is also Rachel Chavkin. He is adjunct professor of Shakespeare at Fordham University in NYC.

Rebecca Naomi Jones is New York-based, American actor and singer who is best known for her Broadway roles in the musicals, Passing Strange, American Idiot, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Oklahoma! She is the first woman of color to play Laurey in Oklahoma!
