Publisher's summary

Hamish Macbeth, constable in the small Scottish Highland town of Lochdubh, is feeling down after losing both his promotion and his girlfriend, the town beauty, Priscilla Halbourton-Smythe. A trip to a charming seaside inn with his dog, Towser, is meant to raise his sagging spirits.

Instead, he arrives at “Friendly House” to find the ambiance chilling, the food inedible, and his fellow guests less than neighborly. There’s an amorous spinster, two flirty girls, a retired military man, a secretive London family, and Bob Harris, who so nags his wife, Doris, that everyone wants to kill him. Then somebody does.

Soon Macbeth is called upon to act - to dig into the past and deep into the heart to deliver something more daunting than merely the culprit: Justice.

One of her best

This is one of her older books and such, has a very compelling plot and avoids the tropes she fell into for her later books. If you’ve liked her other books, you should love this one . Blessings!

One of the Best in This Series

Another good story with twists, turns, tears, and laughter. I have enjoyed all these installments but the best ones for me have a good story but more importantly, when the interchange between the characters makes me laugh, the story is a winner. Pricilla is mentioned but doesn't play a role in this story which is a good thing. A new WPC gets some decent development in this single installment and we have a different set of characters as the chief investigating officer and his detectives because the setting has moved to Skag rather than our normal haunts.

Good narration although the voices get a bit muddled from time to time when trying to voice a higher-pitched voice.

Reccommended

Multifaceted episode

I think you can judge a book by its reviewers and this is covered with perspicuity. Summarily, 1 the narrator messes up Hamish’ voice so hear the sample first to see if it’s tolerable to you. 2 MCB fits in a wide sampling of the elements common to the series, you’ll get what you’re used to plus a visit to a new town. If you’re new to the Hamish saga, probably start earlier. 3 Though handled very well, there is sadness here and I cried for first time in 20+ books. Sorry if I’m spoiling but maybe be prepared if you’re prone to emotion.

Slow

I wasn’t a fan of the narrator on this book. He talked so slow. Normally, I would have stopped a book I was listening too that so slow but I want to finish the series in order. Very disappointed with his narration.

Comfort Food

Hamish McBeth is like comfort food. Between the writer and narrator I am always confident to be served great narration and writing that is of pleasant writing that doesn’t contain excessive spice!

One of the best Hamish books so far!

Hamish learns a lot about himself and proves to be a very very good, empathetic, and kind man. And he solves a murder- as always.

Great Storyteller

Not one of my favorite Macbeths, but still very well written. And another great narration by Sean Grindell.

Enjoying all the books in the series

I'm enjoying this whole entire series so far. I've even gone as far as to Google the places in Scotland only to find out that it's a fictional place. Lol. Great story, great pace, great narration.

Good

A tangled web with everyone not who they seem to be. Plus poor Hamish lost his faithful companion. So sad
