Education can be enriching and transformative. It can also be downright excruciating—even demoralizing. When it comes to learning, why are some of us lovers and some of us haters? Welcome to the world of educational psychology, which uses science to explore what causes people to engage and learn, and what we can do to make learning opportunities more enjoyable and impactful. Spoiler alert: Teachers can only do so much. Students, too, must take control of their learning. Unfortunately, many of us never, ahem, learned the skills to do just that.

I really like the audible version! I got the book, but I loved hearing her voice!
I have listened to her podcasts and heard about her book; so once I started reading, I could just imagine her talking. I realized that I really like the audible version. I can be around my family listening to the audible and learning what I need to do all at the same time. The next time that I listen, I will have the book with me to write down what I need to do. The classroom management club is great. The only thing is that it is being referenced a lot. She does help and has Facebook zoom calls every month on the plan. I had hoped it would be more pages though.

So Helpful for New Teachers!
I am a long-time listener of Dr. Lori's podcasts and have taken her READY For School Academy course. As a new teacher, I am SO grateful for Dr. Lori and all of her practical advice. College is great for teaching you educational theories, background on child development and psychology, and instructional strategies for your content area. But Dr. Lori teaches you all of the little ins and outs of teaching that you just don't think about until you're in the thick of it and wondering why everything is so crazy and wondering why you didn't think of the little things (that are really BIG things).
Things like how to set up and organize your classroom for efficiency, how to prepare for back to school nights and parent conferences, what to get ready in advance for substitues so you can take a sick day without feeling the overwhelm, and sooooo many more things that I NEVER would have thought about before my first year teaching. You don't know what you don't know, and Dr. Lori is amazing at laying out easy to follow, step-by-step directions for exactly what you need to know and do when preparing for the year in your new classroom.
This is a great read for any new or soon to be new teacher, or even beginning teachers who are feeling the overwhelm and need a refresh. You will definitely not be disappointed in this book and all of Dr. Lori's practical advice!

So extremely helpful and inspiring!
WOW! Dr. Lori Friesen's book has helped me prepare for my first year of teaching in ways that I was not sure to be possible. I went to a great school for teaching that taught me so many of the things I truly need to know, but from listening to the Beginning Teacher Talk podcast and now Dr. Friesen's book, I have realized that there is even more to it than I had been taught. Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr. Lori for helping even the most experienced educators feel empowered and ready to tackle a new school year. I am ready to be a great first-year teacher, thanks to the support and wonderful advice from Dr. Lori Friesen!

Very inspiring and very informational!
Dr. Lori is amazing! I loved the audible version of the book because Dr. Lori's voice is so peaceful and calming. I really loved how she compared getting prepared for teaching as a journey. Definitely a must buy for a new beginner teacher and even veteran teachers who need a refresher. My favorite chapter was Chapter 1-Classroom Layout and Organization.

A must have for new and experienced teachers!
As an alumni of the READY for School Academy and a member of the Classroom Management Club I am beyond excited to add yet another Dr. Friesen created resource to my professional library. I just read through “Dear New Teacher” and will definitely be reading and/or listening again this summer as I prepare for my third year in the classroom. Thank you Dr. Friesen for all that you do!

Great summary of everything you need to know.
I thought this book was a great introduction and summary of everything you need to know going into your first year of teaching. It’s not a substitute for Dr. Lori’s READY for School academy. The information and resources it provides is amazing.

Practical, Easy to Follow Mentor Advice
I loved it! Listening to Dr. Lori share her advice and recall her own experiences was like joining your teacher bestie over a cup of coffee (or wine) and sharing stories. I could picture myself in her shoes as she shared each of her anecdotes and smiled every time I heard her life. The strategies discussed will set up any new teacher (and experienced teacher) up for a successful school year! I only wish there were more chapters!
