Publisher's summary

Lately, Bennie Rosato has her eye focused firmly on the bottom line, especially since she has three dedicated young associates and a very pregnant secretary on her payroll; so she takes a professional risk, charging into a class action lawsuit that could make, or break, her career.

Then her wallet goes missing. And Bennie's life goes crazy.

Someone is posing as the outspoken, blue-eyed, blond attorney and is wreaking havoc around town, apparently determined to destroy everything Bennie loves. Only one person can pull off this double deception: Bennie's identical twin sister, Alice Connelly. But as far as Bennie knows, Alice left Philly long ago and never looked back.

When events escalate into murder, the maverick lawyer realizes that the stakes are far greater than she feared. But Bennie Rosato refuses to be anyone's victim. To find the killer, she'll plunge headfirst into a life-and-death investigation that will bring her face to face with an evil darker, yet more familiar, than anything before.

Editorial reviews

After attorney Benedetta Rosato loses her wallet, she receives bills for identical dresses she didn’t buy and is arrested for a robbery she didn’t commit. Narrator Barbara Rosenblat is giddy and girlish when the cynical, wisecracking Bennie meets a hunky Navy SEAL and hard as nails as Bennie solves her client’s murder. When Bennie almost drowns trying to save her dog from Alice’s attempts to murder him, Rosenblat’s performance leaves the listener gasping for breath, relieved to be on dry land. Her witty take on the irrepressible Bennie and her snide asides make the occasionally unlikely plot gimmicks and character inconsistencies almost disappear.

An Okay "read"

As a huge fan of Janet Evanovich, I saw many similarities to Stephanie Plum's cast of characters. Unfortunately, this crew just lacked Stephanie's posse's charm. Good job on narration though.

Bad language, funny author

As usual, Scottoline keeps you guessing. The language factor kept me turning it down and worrying about the kids overhearing. Unfortunately, you never know which of her books will have awful language (Jesus Christ, the f-bomb...all mixed up together). I'm guessing she cleaned them up at some point, but this wasn't one of the clean ones.
The characters are fun, though, and the author has some really funny lines that made me giggle.

One of My Favorites in the Series!!

This book gave good action, suspense, fast paced excitement, great court room scenes, as well as humor. There were times my blood boiled and times I was so upset with events that I wanted to scream. There also were times I felt mushy, happy and rallying for my home girl team, their financial plight, and their well deserved success. This novel included everything I want in a legal thriller.
On a side note... I seem to enjoy the books with Benny as the protagonist more than when Benny is missing or a side character. I love the other girls, but they just don’t have the umph of Benny. For example the free standing books with Mary or Judy are nice, but better when they are together, and best when Benny is the lead or heavily involved in the storyline. At least so far. Highly recommend.

Loved it! The main character, Bennie is smart, sharp, & witty! & her associates are just as interesting! The story glides along easily & is very believable. The murder piece is a surprise! And Bennie's love interest sounds yummy hunky!

Lisa Scottoline does it again! :)

A very good read! I have read all the Lisa Scottoline novels available in audio and I think they are wonderful! This book is no exception! Events which may or may not be related combine to create a complex and suspenseful tale of treachery and greed capped off with friendships old and new both growing and maturing as the characters grow and change. I think the reader is wonderful for this series! She does beautifully with the different dialects and languages and makes each character seem unique and individual! All in all very enjoyable!

Better and better

I love that Scottoline moves from character to character in her novels, giving each of her Philadelphia attorneys a chance to shine. Danger, a hint of romance, and lots of likeable characters, some of whom actually experienced growth drew me into the story. Rosenblat gives a good read, and this mystery just didn't seem long enough--I didn't want this treat to end so soon.
