Excellent historical novel for your history buffs

A must read for any young history buff! Both the story and narration are excellent and the twists and turns of the brave characters facing unspeakable horrors of the civil war will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Story ok… narration annoying.

This is a story about opposing forces— royalty and lower class, dynastic rule and communism, whites and reds, rich and poor. The voices of these two women, one the most high of high class and the other a lowly young Bolshevik volunteer—they needed to be very different. The voice playing Anna needed to be polished and regal. And the voice of Evgenia needed to be more casual. I get it. Anna’s voice is fine. But Evgenia’s voice sounds like a surly, pouty teenager from California. It was one of those narrations where I often replayed a sentence in my own head, voiced in a different tone or emphasis, just to test if the writing was good and the sentence would sound more respectable if read differently. I hate when I have to do that in a book. The story itself was ok overall. A few too many tropes, but entertaining enough, though no particular twists or special narrative interest. But the narration was just hard to get over.
