Beautifully brutal and complex!

This was a series that I could sink my teeth into. The worldbuilding is beautifully brutal...or is it brutal beauty? The characters were vivid, engaging, exotic and complex. I absolutely adored this series starter and am looking forward to the next audiobook.

A Possible Story of People and Events from History

Starr Z Davies has written an interesting and creative story about actual people and events that occurred during Mongolian history. Taking the names from history, the author has woven a tale that abounds with believable characters through her depictions of the events of that time. Her historical research was very evident throughout the book. I recommend this tale for those who enjoy historical recreations. David Wiseman's narration was passable, but at times almost robotic. There were times when I wondered if the narration was completed by a human voice, or if it was computer generated. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.

Very interesting take on historical period

At first the book was slow to really grab my attention, but it did pick up and has me wishing I had time for the full series.

The narrator was excellent. Different voices for characters, inflection was fully there, clear and enjoyable to listen to.

Mongolian Style Romance and Politics

The Daughter of the Yellow Dragon is my first venture into the pre-Columbus (1492?) literary venue of Mongolian stories of normal everyday life Mongolian style...
.
I am highly impressed with the level of detail of Ancient Mongolian everyday Living that Starr Z. Davies has infused into book to say the least.
.
Superstition, romance, conniving, political struggles, gorey details of debasement, spiritual beliefs, huge and profound love...
.
I could blather on and on, but I'll just say that I think it's worth the time to read/listen to.
.
I have been listening to Audiobooks for over two decades, so I hope that my opinion and experience counts for a few folks out there? ;-)
.
I can honestly say that while the romance genre isn't my cup of tea, I don't mind telling you that I truly enjoyed this work of literature. Well done, Starr Z. Davies. ♥️👍♥️

Historically Engaging!

I received a free copy of this audiobook from AudiobookBoom in exchange for an honest review.
A great start to the series set 200 years after the reign of Genghis Khan. The princess Mandukhai is forced to marry the current Khan after his first wife didn't provide an heir. An exciting history, love story, and treachery combine to make this a great read. With some elements left unresolved, I look forward to the next book in the series. The narration was excellent.

I want to give more than 5 stars

Where do I start? This was such a fantastic story & I loved it. Full of control, desire, loyalty and fear, The characters were strong & powerful. Mondukhai dreamed of becoming a warrior. Her dream was destroyed when she learned she was to become the second wife of the Great Kahn Mondule. She did not want to but she had no choice. Once married she had only one task, to provide an heir. Wife #1 was not nice to her and it was kind of a competition between them although Mondukhai could not stand Mondule touching her. As the story continues, Mondukhai must learn who to trust and how she can get away from Mondule and be able to choose for herself. This is full of so many twists and turns you won't be able to put it down, Just a fantastic story.

A great new saga

I thought this was a wonderful start to series I’m eager to continue! The author did a great job at incorporating some very sensitive topics while keeping the story entertaining and exciting. I enjoyed the history and how the story had such a thought out background.

Gritty and Fantastic

The book is super enjoyable, and fairly historically accurate. It is great to hear how a "warrior" is forced into a submissive wife role and her struggles to love another but survive her husband. This book does earn the gritty subgenre but looking forward to the future. The narrator does a great job giving each character their own "voice" and truly shines in this book

Interesting historical novel, horrible narrator.

I read a lot of historical novels. I looked forward to this book because I haven’t read too much about this era in history or about the Mongolian Empire. The story was good, a lot of intrigue in the “court” of Manduul, the aging Khan without an heir. The descriptions of the houses and lifestyle are complete and give the story a good foundation. Unfortunately the narrator is SO bad I almost gave up listening. The nasal aspect his voice and horrible character voices almost ruin the story. There are great narrators (The Outlander series and A Gentleman in Moscow are captivating!) who truly enhance the stories— this is not one of the good ones.
