About this listen

History tells us that the intelligent, wealthy, and powerful Margaret of York had everything any woman could want, except for love. The acclaimed author of A Rose for the Crown takes us between the lines of history and into her heart.

It is 1461. Edward, son of Richard of York, ascends to the throne, and his willful sister, Margaret, immediately becomes a pawn in European politics as Edward negotiates her marriage. The young Margaret falls deeply in love with Anthony Woodville, the married brother of Edward's queen, Elizabeth. But Edward has arranged for his sister to wed Charles, son of the Duke of Burgundy, and soon Margaret is setting sail for her new life. Her official escort: Anthony Woodville.

Margaret of York eventually commanded the respect and admiration of much of Europe, but it appears to history that she had no emotional intimate. Anne Easter Smith's rare gift for storytelling and her extensive research reveal the love that burned at the center of Margaret's life, adding a new dimension to the story of one of the 15th century's most powerful women.

York Outstanding

The story line flows like a novel. Kept my interest to the end. Especially enjoyed the scene descriptions. Rosalyn Landor is an excellent narrator.

Good, but slow

Very well researched and written, but very slow going. Don’t expect much action. Rosalyn Landon always gives a great performance.

Not for me

She had a sad life. I thought the book was boring. I kept hoping something would happen. Then it ends before we know that Mary dies

Very engaging book

The second book in the trilogy is well told, interesting and a good listen but doesn't captivate like the first story. I liked it well enough and am looking forward to the third in the series

Confusing at times

I have read so many of these stories and when I find contradictions in the history I forget which book I’m reading. I love this author but this is not my favorite of her books. It’s worth reading for the setting and some good characters.

Great narration!

The best part of this book is the narrator. She was able to so many accents so well in addition to capturing the characters’ personalities. I found the book okay. Good at first but eventually it became somewhat boring and slow and I was eager to be on to the next thing.

incomplete

book ends implying Maragaret and Anthony would finally get together. that was not to be as when Edwatd IV died, Richard in pretense of protecting nephew who was with Anthony returning to London, had Anthony arrested and quickly executed. then nephews disappeared from the tower.
Margaret lived over 20 years after Anthony's execution, always a thorn in the side of Henry VII till her death, not many years before Henry's death.
