In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

At last, some excellent horror and ghost stories in the classical vein. Clearly, the author has read MR James, of which a couple of these stories are clearly reminiscent. Highly recommended to fans of ghost stories and excellent short horror stories in general.

Great spooky stories!!!
I was not expecting much from this, as I was unfamiliar with the author, and had only happened to come across this title in my list of Audible recommendations. But I’m so glad I decided to give Ashforth a try! The stories are deliciously spooky... I admit I felt a tingle along my spine more than once while listening to these five fantastic narrators... and I was not disappointed in the slightest. In fact, I plan to seek out more of Benedict Ashforth’s work and I won’t feel sorry at all paying good money for it. If you enjoy spooky stories, give this author a try!!! :-D

Haunting but not haunting
Most of the stories weren't original in their plots, and so weren't that scary. Still, the narrators made up for that, by keeping the atmosphere of the stories, that the author wanted. The most original and haunting story is the first one, which has a great twist at the end!

Great “Hitchcockian” style tales!
I grew up in a family that loved tales of horror and suspense. In my opinion, the very best horror stories are not filled with revolting descriptions of blood and gore. The best are those that make you feel uncomfortable and a little worried as to the possibility that the story was actually TRUE. I loved these stories because that’s exactly the way I felt! (My mother would’ve read these to me before bed each night...if the had been available to her)😀😳
