About this listen

For a desperate duchess, an Unseelie duke could be the perfect fake fiance.

A fae woman named Tomorrow is set to inherit a wealthy duchy. The one stipulation: she must marry a man of gentle breeding. But to make it to the altar, she'll have to survive her family first. The next in line will stop at nothing to keep her from collecting.

When she's introduced to the Unseelie Duke of the Dead, she's certain he's the partner she's looking for. He's dragon-strong and just as big and frightening as he is handsome. Most importantly, he appears to be as down on his luck as she is.

The Duke of the Dead . . .

Darko lost everything to war and a tyrannical father. When Tomorrow approaches him with a promised fortune and an offer to act as her pretend lover, he's intrigued.

As they work together to thwart her enemies, a mate bond begins to bud between them, but Tomorrow has secrets she's not yet ready to share. She warns Darko against forming an attachment, but what happens when the duke is done playing pretend?

Contains mature themes.

A must read for romantasy fans who love banter

Content Warning: Grief and loss, foul language, sex work, mild fantasy violence, and open-door sexual scenes between consenting partners including tail play

Fans of A. K. Caggiano's witty banter and rich world building, but who need a bit of a break from the deep dark and high stakes of their novel She's All Thaumaturgy will appreciate S. L. Prater's Dance with the Dragon Duke (2024), a standalone novel in the Fae Tricksters series.

Prater wraps up the series by exploring entirely new ground: an Unseelie male lead, Darko Yaga, who is nothing like the brutish dragons we've encountered before, and Tomorrow, a frail but brave female lead who is neither a warrior nor a witch when we start our story.

All Tomorrow wants is to be safe from the machinations of her upper-class relatives, who are desperate to get their hands on her inheritance. A fake engagement with the Duke of the Dead seems like hitting two birds with one stone; she receives his protection and fulfills the one requirement that stands in the way of claiming the only gift her father ever gave her. What Tomorrow doesn't anticipate is the blooming bond that sparks between them, putting both of their hearts at risk as she holds a life-changing secret close to her chest.

Alternating between Darko and Tomorrow's perspectives, narrators Liam Price and Victoria Aston bring Prater's characters to life, deftly handling the up-and-down emotions that make up this wild ride.

I highly recommend Dance with the Dragon Duke by S. L. Prater to anyone who loves a chuckle-inducing romantasy with solid side characters and lovable leads that are hard to put down.

And I especially recommend the audiobook to my fellow neurospicy readers. As someone who struggles with auditory processing, I never thought I'd be able to enjoy this often-recommended reading format. Thank you, Tantor Audio, for producing content I can enjoy just like everybody else.
