About this listen

Two Native American boys have vanished into thin air, leaving a pool of blood behind them. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police has no choice but to suspect the very worst, since the blood that stains the parched New Mexican ground once flowed through the veins of one of the missing, a young ZuNi. But his investigation into a terrible crime is being complicated by an important archaeological dig and a steel hypodermic needle. And the unique laws and sacred religious rites of the ZuNi people are throwing impassable roadblocks in Leaphorn's already twisted path, enabling a craven murderer to elude justice or, worse still, to kill again.

Loved it!

it is a wonderful story. I loved how the author delved into Navajo (Deni) and Zuni religion. He explained their thinking and reactions via his characters in the storyline. I enjoyed the Narrator.

Missed Officer Chee…

…but love Lieutenant Leaphorn. Tony Hillerman truly has his finger on the pulse of this unusual and unique land…the cultures and the people… as a Native New Mexican who prosecuted criminal cases in McKinley County and Gallup, the series captures regional nuance as well as the imagination.

Wonderful story.

I love the way Hillerman mixes the detective story with Native American cultural and religious explanations.

Another outstanding story!

Characters so raw and exposed that you can’t help but recognize the parts you see in yourself.

The tenacious Leaphorn

Great character development. The difference between the values of the Indians and the white people and the problems that arise from them.

Great Mystery

A great read. Interesting story, good cultural details, and great narrator. I only wish the third book in the series was available.
