About this listen
Famous killers have fan clubs. Hamish Wolfe is no different. Locked up for the rest of his life for the abduction and murder of three young women, he gets countless adoring letters every day. He's handsome, charismatic and very persuasive. His admirers are convinced he's innocent and that he's the man of their dreams. Who would join such a club?
Maggie Rose is different. Reclusive and enigmatic, a successful lawyer and best-selling true-crime writer, she takes on only cases that she can win. Hamish wants her as his lawyer; he wants her to change his fate. She thinks she's immune to the charms of a man like this.
But maybe not this time....
Would you?

Florence Lovelady's career was made when she convicted coffin-maker Larry Grassbrook of a series of child murders 30 years ago in a small village in Lancashire. Like something out of a nightmare, the victims were buried alive. Florence was able to solve the mystery and get a confession out of Larry before more children were murdered, and he spent the rest of his life in prison. But now, decades later, he's dead, and events from the past start to repeat themselves. When her own son goes missing under similar circumstances, the case not only gets reopened...it gets personal.

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

A strange but very well written book
I always loved Sharon Bolton from her first book, and this one is no exception althought it is a bit different from her previous ones. Characters are not especially lovable, but they are very well portrayed, even the secondary ones have their own personalities, I was never confusing or forgetting them, and this, especially in an audio versions, is something very important to me. The story was good, the ending unexpected but satisfactory, it left me speachless. Overall not my favourite Bolton's novel, but still one of my favourite book of this year. It's hard to find thrillers so well written and perfectly constructed, with no loose ends. It was also original, different from any other you could have read before.
At the beginning I didn't like very much the reader, but going on with the story she was perfect for that book, her interpretation making the experience even better. I will surely recommend this book, but if it is your first encounter with the author I would probably start with Sacrifice, or Lacey'serie. This is a wonderful book, but maybe not for everyone, because if you like lovable characters you won't find them here.
