Publisher's summary

Nothing has changed more in the last few decades than our concept and perception of reality. The effects have manifested in our news, entertainment, and Google searches; we're finding that a lot of things we thought were objective aren't automatically so.

Reality is not a concept we want to flush down the toilet with yesterday's food, though. However, we must begin to understand how it works in a world where profit is the driving force.

excellent compilation of thoughts

I have been a subscriber to Peter Coffin's YouTube channel for several years. Everything he talks about here he goes through on the channel as well.

It is nice to have it all in one place and understanding how all the thoughts string together.

I did have some trouble with it mainly because I already knew where it was going. So the build up and explanation of concept I was already familiar with from the YouTube channel was a little difficult to pay attention to. This is clearly a me problem.

That point is to say that if you are familiar already there is some more detail and elaboration. It is the broader scope that this book gives you. it's a fuller picture od the thought process behind "attention is currency in the market place of ideas". That makes it worth a listen.

good book

I feel as though this book has opened my eyes to a lot of the things I've only recently started questioning. In a consumer economy, people are manipulated into desiring unnecessary things. To look good in nice clothes, to own an expensive car, and fill in the blank.

What really struck me was how the author talks about the desire to always be right. This is something that I've tried cut out of my own life. I'll admit when I'm wrong. Hell I sometimes will say someone's right, just because I'd rather get along than have the satisfaction of "I'm right you're wrong." that we all seem to crave.

All the while we keep buying into the latest trends and lifestyles. To suit our desire to be "on the right side" or be part of some community, we stamp a label on our heads. Then we get sold all kinds of products and ideas that suit our so-called identity. This is consumer culture at it's best.

The book talks about a lot more than that. If you live in a consumer economy, which I assume you do, because audible is a subsidiary of the fortune 500 company Amazon, then I recommend you look into this one.

Accessible, Relatable, And Relevant

Written in a sarcacstic yet approachable time, Peter's book plainly addresses many systemic societal issues that took me several classes and hours of reading academic literature to get to on my own.

Great simple book to understand leftist thought

I am used to watch Peter's YouTube Channel so most of this ideas were things that I was familiar, but still worthy the listen to hear it coalesced in one work.
And the VA is incredibly close to Peter's voice, I am pretty sure he imitated his speech patterns.
Great book, great listen.
Not indicated to the theory heavyweights although it can be nice to see a fresh simple take on Marxism and anti Capitalism (the irony that Amazon is the avenue is not lost to me but we are in a capitalist society for now)
