Publisher's summary

When an Alorian finds his mate, an instinct takes over, compelling him to protect her.

Thrust into the king’s Trials, Caitin was bitten and left to die. But the broody captain broke through the guards and ripped the gate off the arena to save her. In an act of vengeance, the king binds their souls together, forcing Caitin to survive or kill the man who saved her.

Layke never thought the gods would bless him with a mate but there she was...standing before him, locked in the dungeons, tied as a participant in the king’s evil Trials. His heart skipped a beat, knowing he would do whatever he could to ensure she lives. Even bind his life to hers....

In a last chance at survival, Layke helps Caitin escape but now he must tell her the truth. He’d already lost his kingdom, he couldn’t lose her too.

Fantastic

This was a great listen with all the my favorite fantasy things with a twist. I thought there was the perfect amount of romance without losing any plot. I loved the incredibly cool world and the author’s new take on vampires. Everything was fresh and exciting. Definitely looking forward to book two!

Good sale pick, not a credit

1) The description is out of order/inaccurate and kind of a spoiler, which just left me confused and disappointed as I listened and it didn’t align.

2) I don’t know exactly if it was just the reader or also the writing, but it often sounded cheesy or basic in the language. I may have been able to ignore or have not noticed it if the reader were different.

3) My biggest complaint: the reader sounds like she’s reading to a small child. It sounds condescending and often over dramatic. I wasn’t sure if I could get through it, but it was the only book I had downloaded at the time so kept listening. (The reader needs to stick to children’s books.)

4) There were a couple spots where it seemed like a detail was supposed to be there but got lost in an edit - mildly confusing. The third trial seems to be missing any content other than the start and end, leaving the change in plot direction feeling sudden and random.

Overall, the story has potential, I just wish it were a little more developed and had a different reader. A quick read that could be good for passing the time if bought on sale, but disappointing for a full credit. I’m on the fence about reading any further books in the series. I liked the characters, and the story is a bit different, I’m just not sure if I can get past the flaws, at least not at full price.
