About this listen
A collection of twisted, disturbing, and downright weird stories about bovine abominations, bestiality, zombies, the birth of the anti-christ, and a trip through purgatory...among other disgusting and degenerate diversions.
Also contains a cow-themed bonus story by Matt Shaw and a short story sequel to one of my all time favorite books, Meat, Leftovers by Michael Bray.
Praise for Cow Made God:
"Mark Nye is one of the new breed of British writers ready to take the horror world by storm. Sometimes weird, sometimes fantastic, sometimes just plain twisted, his fiction will take you places you don’t want to go, and you won’t come back unscathed." (Christian Saunders, author of Sker House and Human Waste)
"A unique collection, where we are subjected to a host of broken and twisted tales which are reminiscent of the comic series, Tales from the Crypt." (Matt Hickman, author of Amnesia, Jeremy, and Sinister Scribblings)

Hannibal Lecter emerges from the nightmare of the Eastern Front, a boy in the snow, mute, with a chain around his neck. He seems utterly alone, but he has brought his demons with him. Hannibal’s uncle, a noted painter, finds him in a Soviet orphanage and brings him to France, where Hannibal will live with his uncle and his uncle’s beautiful and exotic wife, Lady Murasaki. But Hannibal’s demons visit him and torment him. When he is old enough, he visits them in turn. He discovers he has gifts beyond the academic, and in that epiphany, Hannibal Lecter becomes death’s prodigy.

Some call it purgatory, others know it as the in-between, but for those poor souls who are trapped there eternally it is simply: The Carnival - macabre mockery where night is never-ending, and a sadistic creature known as the Fool rules with an iron fist. And the Fool has one rule: No one leaves the Carnival. Ever. Christopher, the latest arrival thrust reluctantly through the gates, is certain that he doesn't belong there, and he's damn sure he's not going to be staying. To have any chance of escaping, he must confront not only the Fool, but his own dark past.

Story
From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King's It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous.

Equal parts haunting and horrifying, this literary horror novel gives listeners insight into the mind of a controlling homicidal man and the son who must stop him. Imagine your father is a monster. Would that mean there are monsters inside you, too? Nineteen-year-old Ry Burke, his mother, and little sister eke out a living on their dying family farm. Ry wishes for anything to distract him from the grim memories of his father’s physical and emotional abuse.

Story
Matheus Taylor didn't ask to be murdered. To be fair, the percentage of people actually asking to be murdered is probably small enough to be safely ignored, but he felt it was worth stating regardless. His life might have been ordinary, but it was his life and he wasn't done with it yet. Quin didn't care. A 1,700-year-old Roman, Quintus Livius Saturnius had a different view of morality than most people. Killing Matheus and hijacking his undead existence seemed perfectly acceptable to him.

The coauthor of Beowulf’s Children strikes out on his own with this novel of mystic revelation and martial arts. What if the disciplines we know as the martial arts, meditation, and fasting were mere fragments of a greater, more powerful killing art? What if that hidden discipline could produce in a man the power to manipulate matter and energy at will? What if the effect on the mind were so deadly that, uncontrolled, the result would be an inhuman killer?

From the moment I saw her through the window of her flower shop, something other than darkness took root inside me. Charlie shone like a beacon in a world that had long since lost any light. But she was never meant for me, a man that killed without remorse and collected bounties drenched in blood. I thought staying away would keep her safe, would shield her from me. I was wrong. Danger followed in my wake like death at a slaughter house. I protected her from the threats that circled like black buzzards, kept her safe with kill after kill.

The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

Take a walk on the dark side of society...
Cow Made God & Other Abominations by Mark Nye, Matt Shaw, Michael Bray and narrated by S. W. Salzman is a set of depraved and disturbing short stories. I would recommend if you are looking for something to shock you, take a walk on the dark side of society, or if this is your typical listen.
Most of the stories held my interest, but some left me wanting just a little more (which would have kept me engaged on a better level). Overall, I give it 3 ½ stars. I would listen to another book by this author and narrator. Revolving themes: animals, religion, and starting fresh doesn’t always mean better (grass isn’t always greener on the other side)...
The narrator, S. W. Salzman, did a great job with these! I would listen to him again.
~A brief description of the stories~
1) Cow Made God- A butcher’s worst nightmare. Approximately 8 minutes.

6) The Unholy Birth- Can’t say much without giving spoilers (Sorry). Approximately 9 minutes.

11) Nebulous Nightmare- A poem. Approximately 1 minute.
12) A Lady and Her Bovine- Fan fiction becomes your worst nightmare. Approximately 17 minutes.
13) The Unfortunate Fortune- Winning the lottery leads a man to an unusual sexual adventure. Approximately 20 minutes.
14) The authors note about how this book came about. Approximately 3 minutes.

Cow Made God & Other Abominations
This is an eclectic collection of stories. Each one brings the listener into a new world full of interesting characters. As with many collections there were some stories that I enjoyed more than others but as a whole this was a nice listen. I found the darker stories more to my liking and enjoyed getting lost in those worlds. Many of these stories are not for the faint of heart and those afraid of a little gore. There is good world building and characters that are well fleshed out. Narrator S.W. Salzman keeps the narration going at a good pace keeping the listener engaged.

What??!?
This is the kind of collection, and of stories, that make me wonder how I'd take it if I haven't gone as deep into extreme horror and the bizarre as I already have. Despite being pretty well-versed in that side of the genre there were definitely still moments of what the hell and ewww that hit me at different times, but I feel that I was definitely able to appreciate the stories better because those feelings came and went and left the overall impact and there was definitely an impact.
It's hard to pick a favorite because the stories were pretty even and none of them slacked in comparison or anything and it was a real treat to have a follow up to Michael Bray's Meat to end it on which is a solid novel that everyone who enjoyed this should check out as well.

Definitely Different
Well this was definitely on the weird and twisted side. I found it funny but I do have a twisted sense of humor. The stories are so out there it's hard to describe. There are some pretty sexual parts in it so reader/listener beware. If you're up for a laugh you have to grab this one.

Wild!
This was straight up my alley. Seriously, almost nothing is sacred here, and you should expect vile and horrible things.
I'm a huge fan of gore and disturbing imagery, and this collection goes above and beyond my expectations. I guess over the years I've become a bit jaded, but several times the stories had me wide-eyed, grimacing, and imagining how I would be reacting myself to some of these situations (probably dying).
You have your standard gore, a revenge yarn, bugs, zombies, blasphemy, unexpected horrible twists, perversions, and cows.
My favorites are:
Cow Made God
Man Made Cow
The Unholy Birth
Purgatory
School's Out
Lisa's New Life
There are a couple of stories by other authors included as well, and I enjoyed Leftovers as well.
Finally, the author helpfully recommends a few of his favorite books, which I will definitely be checking out, especially Meat.
The narrator does a fine job.

Not my cup of tea
So unless you have some bestiality fantasies you may be more than a bit turned off by this collection. I kept waiting for one of the stories to grab me and honestly only the very last one was good and it wasn’t by Mark. I love shock horror, I love horror comedy, I love all sort of blood and gore but this was just not good. It felt like a teen boy trying to write things to shock and disgust his friends.
SW Salzman is the only reason I got through this. He is one of my favorite narrators and he’s a great writer too. Sadly none of his work was included in this book.
