About this listen

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From the acclaimed author of The Longest Ride and The Notebook comes an emotional, powerful novel about wondering if we can change—or even make our peace with—the path we’ve taken.

“Sparks is superb at what he does. The setting is postcard perfect. The characters are immensely likable. . . . This is a tidy miracle you can count on.”—The Washington Post

Tanner Hughes was raised by his grandparents, following in his grandfather’s military footsteps to become an Army Ranger. His whole life has been spent abroad, and he is the proverbial rolling stone: happiest when off on his next adventure, zero desire to settle down. But when his grandmother passes away, her last words to him are find where you belong. She also drops a bombshell, telling him the name of the father he never knew—and where to find him.

Tanner is due at his next posting soon, but his curiosity is piqued, and he sets out for Asheboro, North Carolina, to ask around. He’s been in town less than twenty-four hours when he meets Kaitlyn Cooper, a doctor and single mom. They both feel an immediate connection; Tanner knows Kaitlyn has a story to tell, and he wants to hear it. To Kaitlyn, Tanner is mysterious, exciting—and possibly leaving in just a few weeks.

Meanwhile, nearby, eighty-three-year-old Jasper lives alone in a cabin bordering a national forest. With only his old dog, Arlo, for company, he lives quietly, haunted by a tragic accident that took place decades before. When he hears rumors that a white deer has been spotted in the forest—a creature of legend that inspired his father and grandfather—he becomes obsessed with protecting the deer from poachers.

As these characters’ fates orbit closer together, none of them is expecting a miracle . . . but that may be exactly what is about to alter their futures forever.

Critic reviews

“Sparks is superb at what he does. The setting is postcard perfect. The characters are immensely likable. . . . This is a tidy miracle you can count on.”The Washington Post

“The romance between Tanner and the doctor sizzles, and Sparks is a master at creating fully developed, sympathetic characters with complete and compelling backstories. Readers will be drawn into this touching story of hope, faith, and love, and Spark’s many fans will find just what they’re looking for.”Booklist, starred review

“Bestseller Sparks brings all the emotion fans expect in his heart-tugging latest. . . . Sparks enriches Kaitlyn and Tanner’s love story with a striking supporting cast, especially Kaitlyn’s kids, Casey and Mitch, and an elderly neighbor named Jasper. The mystery of Tanner’s parentage finally unravels at the story’s end, delivering an emotionally satisfying finale. This is sure to be another hit for Sparks.”Publishers Weekly

Good story with terrible narration

I love how the stories of the three main characters intertwined. We got to know Jasper well. We needed more time with Tanner and Kaitlyn. The descriptions of the settings were well done. I hated Dreamland so I was hesitant to try this book. I was drawn into the story almost immediately.

However, the narrator almost had me returning this for credit. I was on a solo road trip and wanted a continuous listen. This narrator was fine when reading thoughts and descriptions. When the narrator tried to do voices for the characters when speaking, I thought my ears would bleed, especially when voicing Mitch and Casey. I would give the performance negative stars if I could. I listen to 2 audiobooks per week and this is the worst narration I have heard. I do not understand how anyone gave this more than one star.

Read the book! Don’t let this narrator ruin the story.

It was ok…

I liked the character development. Loved Jasper. His spirit could not be defeated! Realistic character thoughts…Good descriptions of the scenes. You felt like you were there. Please know that I have read almost every Nicholas Sparks story published, and maybe that is the problem. I read them. I did not listen to them.

I think Nicholas should stick to writing novels, not try to narrate them. His voice did not have the variety and variation needed to carry off this story. His deliver was slow and slurred at times.
I would recommend he have January LaVoy(Nora Roberts’ narrator)be his voice. I truly believe it would have made the difference for this story.

Predictable story.

i was excited for a new NS book but although the story itself was OK, it was very predictable. not the best of Nicholas Sparks I have read. I had to slow the reading speed as the narration was too fast and sometimes his voice was annoying.

A story that reflects the resilience of the human spirit

This was such a beautifully told story of the test of faith in the moments of life’s greatest challenges. In traditional Nicholas Sparks fashion, each individual storyline is woven intricately to overlap so perfectly.

Great story; terrible narration

It was a great, in depth & loving that only Sparks can write. I loved the scripture verses woven throughout the story. The big disappointment was the narration. Female & children voices were cringe worthy & even the male & narrator roles were just ok. I think they could have found a much better narrator for this beautiful book.
