About this listen

Cora's a young girl with two dreams: to be a dragon jockey when she grows up and to own a pet dragon now. She constantly buys "egg packs" at the dragon emporium in hopes that one will hatch into a rare pet-sized dragon, but only gets short-lived mayflies. However, when an unexpected egg does develop into something new, Cora may be over her head.

How to hatch your dragon

Did you know that all dragons start out the same? If the eggs are intended every dragon egg will hatch into a short lived and tiny mayfly dragon. But when tended by a nurse dragon, the eggs can hatch many different varieties of dragons.

This is what Cora discovers when she finds a lone egg one day and hatches a unique dragon.

What a fun story world. Picture the 1920's but with a shop that sells pet dragons and instead of horse racing
it's dragons they ride.

This is such a fun story, perfect for the whole family to enjoy.

The narrator Sheri Sheridan delivers a great performance which brings the characters to life.

Every child wants a pet dragon

Would you consider the audio edition of Cora and the Nurse Dragon to be better than the print version?

I believe audio is becoming the choice method for people too busy to read a book, but I still love to turn pages and I'm sure kids do too. The producer of this book was very good.

What did you like best about this story?

From grandparents who sang "Puff the Magic Dragon" to the parents who grew up with "Pete's Dragon," we each have had a dream at some point of coming face to face with a mild-mannered dragon who would befriend us. Cora and her friends live in a world where dragons are common house pets, and the larger ones have replaced horses at the races. What a delightful world it is, filled with dragons as small as a Mayfly to those the size of a house cat. But there are the rare larger dragons and kids can be involved in a lottery game to see what type of dragon they will get for their precious coins. The problem is that the eggs typically only produce the Mayfly dragons who live a very short life. The laws are meant to eliminate dragons in the wild and support the lavish lifestyles of the wealthy by making them a commodity. I loved the fact that Cora and her friends were able to see the injustices created by the adults and their dedication to protecting those things meant to be wild.

What about Sheri Sheridan’s performance did you like?

The performance was good, but I felt like it lacked the kind of excitement a young person would feel reading this story. It was a solid performance, but I could only give it four stars because I couldn't feel the excitement in her voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was touched so much by the moment when the bully showed his weak side. Anything more would be a spoiler.

Any additional comments?

I had purchased the ebook several months ago, but hadn't had a chance to read it yet when the author offered an audible code. The timing was perfect because I was going to have some eye surgery and wouldn't be able to work for a few days. This is my honest review of the audio book.

So cute!

I loved this story! The narrator captured the children's voices perfectly. The dragons were entertaining, and the whole idea of the nurse dragon was unique. It raises questions about human responsibility for nature. Cora is faced with some tough choices. Very relatable middle grade story. Kidnapping and on off-screen death occurs.

Pet Dragons? Yes, please.

Would you listen to Cora and the Nurse Dragon again? Why?

Yes, it is a very fun listen. I love the concept this author has for dragons. It's much like a lizard or a mouse in our world. It's the common pet that every child wants to have. The catch? They're the size of dragonflies, well, most of them. I expect to listen to this again if the rest of the series comes to audible.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cora and the Nurse Dragon?

When she first discovers the dragon is a nurse dragon, and its attention to the eggs.

What about Sheri Sheridan’s performance did you like?

She did a fantastic job, both getting excited at the right moments, and clear narrative. I was very happy with the narrator.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Would you like a pet dragon? The size of a dragonfly, or a large cat? Hatch an egg to find out.

Any additional comments?

This was a fun listen, a story that reflects on friendship, bullies, and the desire to do good. I forsee this being a fantastic series.

Great animal story with a twist--Dragons!

Growing up I loved Walter Farley and Jim Kjelgard. The stories of the boy who loved a horse or a dog but couldn't afford it. He'd do anything to get one. Cora and the Nurse Dragon has that same feel with a slight twist. Instead of being a dog or a horse, Cora loves dragons!
The story moved along at a good pace with the narrator adding to the enjoyment. Adventure awaits Cora and her friend as they raise pet dragon eggs. When Cora finds an egg that hatches into something other than the normal kind of dragon, she finds herself faced with decisions that bring her in conflict with her father.
I loved the story. It had the feel of a great animal tale. If it was a movie it almost could be called a chick flick, due to the emotions it evoked at the end.
I received a free copy of the audio book.

Dragons!

What an absolutely wonderful story!

Cora is a young girl from the wrong part of town who loves dragons. The local Emporium sells a box of dragon eggs for a penny and Cora buys one whenever she can. However, all of the eggs hatch into Mayflies, the smallest and most common dragons.

When she rescues an egg from her nemesis, Xavian, it hatches into a brown dragon like nothing Cora has ever seen. She and her friend, Abry, decide to start a business using Cricket's skills in making the eggs hatch, little knowing the trouble that will cause.

The story is great for young and old alike. There is plenty of love and loyalty, a bully who finally becomes a friend, and Dragons! A lot of good life lessons for young children (and adults as well) in a thoroughly engaging story.

The narrator did a great job and the writing is excellent. I love this book and think that any child who gets the chance to read it will remember it for a long, long time.
