Story
Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

Green Thumb Made Easy
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
It lay dormant for many years until my mid-50s when I dug up a sunny corner of my yard and gardened again. I didn't test the soil or count the hours of sunshine -- I just planted what appealed to my appetites. My harvests were irregular and unpredictable, as you would expect. But I enjoyed the same therapeutic feel of dirt between my fingers and the sharp fragrance of freshly pinched tomato suckers.
And then we moved to a home with luxurious grass and sculpted flower beds, but no garden. My inner gardener hibernated, patient, waiting for the conditions to change.
When we took down a birch tree in 2023, we suddenly had a wide swath of flower bed available. I dug up some of the roots, dumped in some potting soil, and planted a few tomatoes and kale. They exploded! I did the same in 2024 and added two hills of zucchini and summer squash. I probably would have repeated the process this spring.
But then I read Companion Planting for Beginners, and now I'm seeing my backyard flower bed with new eyes. There is tremendous, untapped potential back there! Inspired by this beautifully written and information-packed book, I have bought a soil testing kit. I am perusing the seed catalog, deciding whether to start my plants from seeds instead of buying them at the farmers' market. I am getting ready to rip out the rest of the birch tree roots to make room for beets, radishes, beans, eggplants, and more. I'm excited to steer clear of herbicides and harness the synergies of companion planting. And perhaps most important, I'm anticipating restful Sunday afternoons with my hands in the dirt, sun on my arms, and the delicious sights and smells of living things all around.
The joy and wonder that Gardener Sage derives from his garden infuses every page of this book. Listen soon to Companion Planting for Beginners -- spring planting season is just around the corner!

What hit home for me was how they explained using marigolds to keep pests off my veggies. I tried it after listening, planting some near my zucchini, and I swear I saw fewer of those creepy little beetles this time around. The part about soil health clicked too. I started mixing in some compost like they suggested, and my plants look perkier already. It’s not preachy or overly technical; it’s just practical stuff I could use without feeling judged for being a newbie. If you’re like me and want to grow your own food without losing it all to bugs or bad dirt, this one’s worth a listen.
