About this listen

Colombian Killers explores the stories of three men who have forever tainted the lush fields of Latin America. This book narrates the sadistic acts of serial killers Luis Alfredo Garavito, Pedro Alonzo Lopez, and Daniel Camargo Barbosa.

For these men, rape and murder were but the beginning of the horrors they inflicted upon the world. The fear their crimes inspire is not about their nature, the methodology, or even the victims. It is about who the killers themselves are.

These men were motivated by perhaps the most chilling trifecta - sex, power and revenge.

This book begins with three parts, each dedicated to one of these three monsters of modern-day Colombia. Once you've been edified with the general knowledge of the atrocities, we will delve further into the tiny details, the forgotten horrors, the thousands of ways that we as a society failed these men and, in so doing, shaped them into be the monsters they are known as today.

Luis Alfredo Garavito, Pedro Alonzo Lopez, and Daniel Camargo Barbosa are among the most prolific serial killers in the world. Between them, they were convicted of 329 murders, but it's believed that the number they committed is over 750.

Colombian Killers is not for the faint of heart, nor for the feeble of spirit. Be very sure you want to know what you are about to hear, because if you can be sure of nothing else, be sure of this: You will never forget what you are about to hear.

Though this book was well written, it lacked depth. There was very little background and lacked emotion.

Fascinating but no depth

Disturbing True Life Accounts of Little Known Serial Killers.

TARGET AUDIENCE: True life crime story that is not over editorialized. The author provides an accurate account of the actual facts of the stories of these abhorrent individuals. It makes you aware that are individuals who prey on the weak and downtrodden in every country and nation

PROFANITY, SEX & VIOLENCE: Appropriate for all ages. Written in a way that describes the heinous crimes without using delving into details.

NARRATOR: Excellent job narrating these accounts.

OVERALL: I love to read about true crime, and this is a well written account of serial killers which you probably have not heard about in the English speaking world. Excellent book.

This book looks at three brutal cases that are probably not known to you if you are in the English speaking world. I tend to like true crime books that go into a lot of detail, so of course three stories that are covered in an hour and forty five minutes are going to have less depth. Knowing that, I enjoyed the stories anyway. It's always interesting to hear about crimes that have been committed in foreign countries and how their judicial system differs from the one in my home country. These were some bad dudes; if you are sensitive to child abuse, I'd steer clear of this one!

This was a great audiobook. I love true crime and I have never heard of the 3 serial killers in this book. This book gives the listener a glimpse into some of the darkest minds and what unimaginable things some people are capable of. The book itself does not go into too much detail about the crimes, but it still may not be for everyone.

I was given one of this author's other true-crime books by the publisher, and thought it was so interesting that I actually went out and bought his other work, including this one. I found this book to be just as good in much the same way: its a fast-paced, reporterly chronicle of a series of truly horrible crimes, professionally narrated in a way that enhances the author's style but doesn't overpower the story. It somehow made it even more interesting that the 3 serial killers discussed in this book were from South America and committed their crimes in and around Columbia. The unusual setting and characters were an intriguing twist that I appreciated after reading so many true crime stories set in small-town America. Most of all, I really like the author's ability to take complex stories that involve gruesome, horrific crimes and boil them down to their most interesting essence. Too many true crime books get buried in excess biographical details or grisly blow-by-blow dramatizations of the crimes themselves. Green, while he doesn't shy away from the grim and horrific, seems to report it rather than breathlessly embroidering it as many authors tend to do. All told, it felt like a particularly compelling 3-part feature magazine article or 48 Hours Investigative series, and I found that to be a refreshing -- and riveting -- change from many true crime chronicles.
