Publisher's summary
The Jesus movement of the '70s was a heady time. It was a time of Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell. It was a time of the Doobie Brothers telling us that “Jesus Is Just Alright with Me”, and Norman Greenbaum singing about a “Spirit in the Sky”. It was a time when Jesus was going to return any day, according to the best-selling book The Late Great Planet Earth. It was a time of the Rapture, Armageddon, and the Antichrist.
Dave Warnock’s faith took root during this intoxicating era, and soon he was speaking in tongues, casting out demons, and praying for legs to grow. That raw, emotional faith grew into a mature Christian lifestyle over the next three and a half decades, including pastoral roles on three different church staffs, where the innocence of Dave's early faith evolved into staff meetings, budgets, and carefully planned worship services. Dave's spiritual journey included vocational, financial and personal struggles, and an increasingly frustrating search for God's involvement.
But what if it’s not true? What if there’s not an active God doing things for his people? What does a man do when he pauses and reflects on a life lived in this kind of faith, and finds, upon examination, that the God he dedicated his life to has never been there?
By 2011, Dave had come to the conclusion that he no longer believed in a personal God and he rejected his lifelong faith. In 2019, he was diagnosed with ALS.

Story
Seth Andrews wasn't an idiot during his 30 years as an evangelical Christian. He wasn't unintelligent, nor did his IQ shift when he ultimately left religion entirely. He considered himself thoughtful, moral, reasonable, and at least as smart as the average person. In other words, he wasn't an idiot. Yet strangely, he often sounded like one.

Story
The God of the Old Testament commanded and endorsed many practices that we find morally reprehensible today. High on the list was the institution of slavery, which features prominently in several sections of the Hebrew Bible. Fathers could sell their daughters into slavery, masters could beat their slaves, creditors could carry off children for failure to repay a debt, and foreigners could be kept for life, passed down as inherited property. How are we to make sense of all of this from our modern point of view?

Religious fundamentalists and biblical literalists present any number of arguments that attempt to disprove evolution. Those with a sympathetic ear often fail to critically examine these creationist claims, leading to an ill-informed public and, perhaps more troubling, ill-advised public policy. As Aron Ra makes clear, however, every single argument deployed by creationists in their attacks on evolution is founded on fundamental scientific, religious, and historical falsehoods - all of them.

Seth Andrews idolized Rush Limbaugh. He listened to Glenn Beck. He read Ann Coulter. He watched Fox News. He was an evangelical Christian once tethered to right-wing media, which constantly warned of an attack on American values by liberals and secular humanists. Today, Seth is a liberal and secular humanist. This audiobook explores the Fox News culture, which both reflects and informs American conservatism, shaping public opinion on important issues like religion, government, race, foreign policy, war, protest, LGBT rights, and the Constitution.

Story
For centuries the gospels have been cherished devotional literature, and under the guidance of preachers and priests, they’ve been understood as reliable depictions of Jesus. But even the most devout Christians stumble across sayings of Jesus that don’t sound quite right. In fact - if we’re honest - some of them are alarming. But the problem won’t go away, even if many of the faithful file these troublesome texts in a mental drawer marked “Too uncomfortable to think about”. In fact, the problem is much larger than many people suppose.

In this “eloquent understanding of how death is viewed through many spiritual traditions” (Publishers Weekly, starred review), Bart Ehrman recounts the long history of the afterlife, ranging from The Epic of Gilgamesh up to the writings of Augustine, focusing especially on the teachings of Jesus and his early followers. He discusses ancient guided tours of heaven and hell, in which a living person observes the sublime blessings of heaven for those who are saved and the horrifying torments of hell for those who are damned.

Story
This personal story about a spiritual journey away from Christianity is an honest examination of what we can know about God. Popular religious beliefs and practices are challenged, with potential new information for those who may be questioning their faith. After formal academic study of religion, Baptist minister David Ramsey became agnostic and left the ministry altogether. In this book, he shares how his search for truth led to personal doubts about the foundation of Christianity, the resurrection of Jesus, and eventually the very existence of God.

When Alice Greczyn's parents felt called by God to exchange worldly employment for heavenly provision, they followed their faith into homelessness with five children and a cat in tow. Homeschooled and avowed never to kiss a man until her wedding day, Alice had plans to escape by becoming a missionary nurse—plans that were put on hold with the opening of an unexpected door: the opportunity to be a Hollywood actress. What followed was a test of faith unlike any she had prepared for, one that forced her to learn to survive without the only framework for life she had ever known.

Even though a growing number of Americans don’t believe in god, many remain reluctant to say so out loud. Kate Cohen argues that not only is it rewarding for those of little faith to announce themselves, it’s crucial to our country’s future. As she details the challenges and joys of fully embracing atheism—especially as a parent—Washington Post contributing columnist Kate Cohen does not dismiss religion as dangerous or silly. Instead, she investigates religion’s appeal in order to explain the ways we can thrive without it.

Story
The scholarship of theology and religion teaches us that the God of the Bible was without a body, only revealing himself in the Old Testament in words mysteriously uttered through his prophets, and in the New Testament in the body of Christ. The portrayal of God as corporeal and masculine is seen as merely metaphorical, figurative, or poetic. But, in this revelatory study, Francesca Stavrakopoulou presents a vividly corporeal image of God: a human-shaped deity who walks and talks and weeps and laughs, who eats, sleeps, feels, and breathes, and who is undeniably male.

Critic reviews
“Raw, open, honest - I can’t imagine the courage it took to write this book, but it is a story you will not be able to put down until the last page. I hope this has a healing influence on anyone who reads it.” (Dr. Darrel Ray, president and founder of Recovering from Religion, author of The God Virus and Sex & God, founder of the Secular Therapy Project)
“You will need a fire extinguisher as you read Dave Warnock’s journey. The pages blaze with courage, intensity, drama and heartbreak - and sometimes real fire. This candid revelation of behind-the-scenes ministry has no come-to-Jesus moment. Just the opposite.” (Dan Barker, co-president of Freedom from Religion Foundation, author of Godless and Life Driven Purpose)

Really enjoyed this!
It was funny, touching, moving etc. All the regular adjectives. It's an in-depth look into religious trauma and control. It's an uplifting take on a mostly sad story. And it's a straightforward and easy listen that flows well and makes complex topics understandable and relatable as it reaches beyond the particulars and touches the core of human experience.

So grateful that Dave shared his journey with the world. Raw, honest and inspiring. The twists and turns are difficult to comprehend and despite all of this, Dave eagerly pursues all of the moments that life has to offer. Truly, carpe the f!@%ing diem.

An honest retelling of a fascinating journey
This was a fascinating memoir. I grew up religiously though not in a charismatic, evangelical denomination. This book was eye-opening and taught me a lot about life in that arena. The story was always entertaining, and Dave is a great narrator. I enjoyed it enough to read the hardcopy and then, when I learned that he narrated the audiobook, listened to it as well. I can’t recommend more both of those versions. You will experience just about every range of emotion while reading it. In full disclosure, my wife and I know Dave personally and know him to be a great guy. However, this is an honest review, and I recommend it to Christians, atheists, and everyone in between.

5 Stars All the way!
I wanted to say, I have met the author. And this book is fantastic. It was good to hear about the past, present, and the future of someone I think we can ALL learn from. Dave has a mission. Not to spread the gospel. No. Not an obligation to save others and bring them to the "Word" No. He is on a mission to, "Carpi The F@*king Deim." And is here to tell us all that we should as well. Great book Dave. Such truth. Thanks for telling it like it is. 👍

A very personal and touching story of finding who you are
A very compelling story. So personal, thoughtful and moving. It was told like a story rather than a book about deconstructing from Christianity. It was interesting and refreshing to have this kind of perspective.
But it wasn’t sin or the numerous tragedies that occurred in his life or to people around him that eventually lead to Dave’s deconversion it was questioning and studying. Something we should all do with our deeply held beliefs. I love the message that Dave gives with this book and his work. Live life on your terms and die with dignity when you’re ready.

Now That's How You Write A Memoir!
(Reviewed by Laura's husband Shawn Gallant)
Ever since I first saw Dave on atheist's social media sites, I wanted to know more about this man that was facing his pending death with ALS with such honesty and fearlessness.
Truly an awesome story about life and finding a way through the messiness of it all.
I commend Dave on his honesty and openness in telling his story.
I admire Dave's ability to be influential and inspiring in all that he does and writes.
I can only hope to face my own death with such gravitas.
I find myself thinking "What Would Dave Do?" when life gets to me.
