Publisher's summary

Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last!

But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

Editorial reviews

"Douglas Hodge delivers Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in a briskly melodic canter, and his rendering holds its own against memories of cinema's Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp." (Gregory Maguire, The New York Times Book Review)

Critic reviews

"Rich in humor, acutely observant, Dahl lets his imagination rip in fairyland." (The New York Times)

“Roald Dahl sometimes shared a tonal kinship with Ogden Nash, and he could demonstrate a verbal inventiveness nearly Seussian...[His] stories work better in audio than in print.” (The New York Times)

Wonderfully read

The narrator did great on this classic book. My 8 year old and I enjoyed listening to it on a road trip recently. I have always loved all of Roald Dahl’s books.

Amazing narration!

While we are all familiar with the story, Douglas Hodge brings new life to the story. This is hands down the best reader we've listened to.

Enjoyed this story Again!

It's hard to believe the first time I read this book was over 45 years ago! I just listened to the book with my grandkids. The magic of the story is still there! There was such joy on their faces listening to this story. It tickles me to see them expressing themselves giggling, laughing being surprised 😳 with every chapter!
The narrator reads the story perfectly!
This is a must for all grandparents to share.
