Critic reviews

"Pack's horror anthology provides a great deal of haunting entertainment, especially as delivered by the gifted narrator Jacob York.... York narrates with such compelling energy that listeners will follow him through all the evil and deadly encounters in the collection." ( AudioFile)

What did you love best about Certain Dark Things?

I really thought this was a great book of short stories, really made me say what the...F@&! many times... I even had to rewind to make sure I heard the ending correctly sometimes.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Certain Dark Things?

Ducky.

What about Jacob York’s performance did you like?

He was wonderful. I thought it would be difficult to hear a man voicing a girls character because so many narrators are not so good at it but he did amazing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I think it would be awesome for this book to be turned into a mini series like on Netflix because of stories but to name it.... the title of the book is already perfect for it so just leave it. "Certain Dark Things"

Any additional comments?

I wish there was more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What A Dark Surprise!

A collection of truly dark and deep short stories,
many of which have a sexual element that makes this book so much more than your typical Halloween collections.

The Perfect Adult Halloween Book

The stories were dark and somewhat interesting, but the narration made them hard to get into. There was something about the narrator's voice that just got under my skin. There was too much... space between his words, like he was reading in slow motion. And I understand the need to achieve an eerie feeling, but his tone was overtly dramatic, emphasizing the wrong words at the wrong times. It definitely would have fared better using a different narrator.

Okay stories, sub-par narration

Would you listen to Certain Dark Things again? Why?

Yes, the stories were good and short enough to grab one on my long-ish commute.

Who was your favorite character and why?

No one particular character, short stories don't give enough time to develop a favorite.

What does Jacob York bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A good vocal range, each character sounds unique and emotes well.

Any additional comments?

One thing, I could swear I read a few of these on creepypasta sites a few years back, especially the one about the twins. *Shrug*

Good book but...

I didn't know of MJ Pack before listening, but I will be seeking our her work from here on out. The gambit of horror to creepy is so broad from story to story without reliance on tropes. Each character has definite individuality, background, drive; each story it's own flavor. The author can write from any perspective, it seems, thoroughly convincingly and the narrator brings each to life with an obviously artistic discernment: never overdramatic nor dry. I cannot recommend this enough. I sent it as a gift to a friend before I was halfway through it.

Great delivery of Really Creepy Stories

Best short stories that I have read in quite a while! I often had to stop listening late at night the stories were that intense.

Excellent!

Would you try another book from M.J. Pack and/or Jacob York?

Yes, probably. Jacob York is quite an interesting narrator, and, while some stories were slow, M.J. Pack did have several that interested me enough to try more.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

There were several stories that weren't really very intense or thrilling? There were several that were slow and un-interesting. Though there were a handful, just enough, that were cringe-worthy enough to make me want more.

Which scene was your favorite?

MARIO LOPEZ SHIRTLESS was one of the most interesting stories in the collection.

Did Certain Dark Things inspire you to do anything?

Turn the lights on?
