About this listen

Book 2 of the Ciaphas Cain series.

When Commissar Ciaphas Cain and his regiment of Valhallan Guardsmen are deployed to the ice world of Simia Orichalcae, his expectation of an uneventful tour of duty is suddenly interrupted.

Listen to it because:

While his Valhallan regiment are happy on an ice world, Cain's biggest concern is freezing to death...until orks start attacking, and then an ancient threat emerges from the depths. Stuck between two enemies, Cain needs to stop playing the hero and actually be one.

The story:

On the ice world of Simia Orichalcae a spate of mysterious disappearances is causing unrest amongst the mine workers, and, as senior officer of the Astra Militarum, Commissar Ciaphas Cain is nominated to investigate. Unbeknownst to him, the planet is right in the path of a major ork incursion, and, as the savage greenskins attack, a malevolent evil begins to stir deep in the ice caves.

Written by Sandy Mitchell. Narrated by Stephen Perring, Penelope Rawlins and Emma Gregory.

This entry in the series is does not have the same humor as the previous material, that being said if you enjoy Cain as much as I do then you will enjoy this book.

Still a good series !!!!!

Great story made me laugh as well as be repeatedly engaged by the action and life-or-death struggles

Engaging with just the right amount of humor

I loved the Ciaphas Cain books when I bought them in their omnibus forms, and was therefore a bit sad when I couldn't find any in audio format and Black Library was...well, being themselves and focusing more on the Astartes, as usual. This and For The Emperor hitting Audible was a shot in the arm I needed.

It's unabridged, well handled, with the annotations actually flowing well with the different voice actors switching over, unlike when reading it I had to glance down to see it then go back up and find my place again. It's also good to know my memories of the series aren't rose tinted glasses because I still loved going through the story again and was even surprised in a few moments.

More, Audible, we need more. Hell, we need ALL of them. Gimmeeeee

Need more

Was a very satisfying and interesting read although it can drag
Narrator can tend to not pause after sentences from characters which leads to confusing moments where you have to think about where words end and thoughts start but other than that the voices and acting is fantastic

Worth the read

The novel is a part of a set of books by author Sandy Mitchell. The story revolves around the rakish commissar Ciaphas Cain and his trusty sidekick Jurgen.

No Cain novel or audio drama have been bad in my experience.

The book is written as a historical account being investigated by and inquisitor published for instruction within her order. There is a great deal of humor in the novel, yet it succeeds in maintaining drama and character as well.

Really any of the Ciaphas Cain stories could be listened to in any order, they are all enjoyable as either stand-alone or series.

Black Adder for 40k.
