Acerca de esta escucha

Captured: The Secret Behind Silicon Valley’s AI Takeover is a thrilling journey into the hidden worlds of the tech elite, and a whistleblower’s look into the sci-fi future they’re building for all of us.

Seven years ago, a pink-haired young data analyst called Christopher Wylie blew the whistle on a company called Cambridge Analytica. The scandal he unleashed revealed how millions of Facebook users’ data was being harvested to influence elections. It was supposed to be a turning point—one where the tech companies were regulated, their power kept in check. But Silicon Valley is now more powerful than ever. President Trump is back in the White House with tech billionaire Elon Musk by his side, and the tech giants are racing to build AI systems that could give them unprecedented power over our lives.

Our destiny is being imagined for us by some of the richest and most powerful people in the world. They’re promising they can solve all our problems—end toil and suffering, and propel us into a utopia where we can live forever and never have to work.

AI has become the new religion. Are we going to follow it? Do we even have a choice? Or have the tech evangelists captured our future? Join Christopher Wylie and Coda Story’s Isobel Cockerell as they journey from exclusive crypto parties in Dubai, to the slums of Kenya where thousands of hidden workers are training AI models, to the hacker palaces of San Francisco where tech’s true believers talk about merging computers with our brains.

Note that this production incorporates limited uses of AI to illustrate how AI functions and is applied in various contexts.

Informative and honest take on AI. It’s scary but it’s better to be prepared! Must listen!

Brutally Honest

This illuminating report on a complex world was recommended to me by an algorithm. I get the irony, it probably doesn't, or does it? Well done to all implied, I hope this audio reaches all the people who need it. It is remarkable how much of this has already been anticipated in fiction in the early nineties. Thinking of Lt Commander Data in Star Trek Next Generation.

Thought-provoking, empowering

I did thoroughly enjoy this Audible original, it shows the insane possibility of our future, and it also shows the pluses and minuses to humanity, and what humanity can create with intelligence. I felt there was a little bit of political bias involved in this, but aside from that it was very well done

Insane possibilities

I no longer believe we the average populace will have any control over what AI does to the human race—only the rich will be involved in making this decisions. I also wonder if the rich will be making the decisions for themselves or for the benefit of everyone.

Thought provoking questions about where AI will take us.

It was likeable due to the interesting nature of the overall plot. It also opens our eyes regarding the greed and evil behind data collection and how it is being used and how money 💰 not people is what really matters to these organizations that do desperately want our personal information. It makes a guy paranoid about disclosure of said data. That's about it. K, bye

They showed that innocent seeming things can be down right evil.

Isobel and Christopher take us all over the globe, from San Fransisco to Nairobi, in order to understand more deeply the ideology and what they argue as the new religion of our technologically-obsessed era, and the preachers of Silicon Valley. The absolute take-away I got from their reporting is that technology is a choice and not a necessity or inevitability: that we have the choice to incorporate technology into our societies that we collectively determine as beneficial. The disturbing reality however, is that a select few oligarchs and powerful men are throttling forward with little regard for the consequences of their embrace of this new techno-religion. They do a deep dive into how our social media networks are designed for addiction and profit, showcasing the human costs of outsourcing content moderation to the Global South and how they are a source of so much misinformation that are destroying our democracies. They talk with nurses about automation in hospitals, and how companies (again for profit) want to replace the entire nursing profession with robots and algorithms, instead of human-centered care. In the end, the dazzling promise of a techno-futuristic world of automation and cyborgs is revealed as a smoke-screen where the concentration of wealth continues apace, where inequality promises to reach unparalleled levels, where the hubris of trying to life forever ends up destroying the social fabric of our societies and the joys and spontaneities of eking out a human life. AI can bring promise for human flourishing, but as this podcast rightfully demonstrates, any human technological innovation (nuclear energy, genome editing) is mediated by the ideologies and biases of those who have created it. Against new forms of eugenics, apocalyptic survivalism, and strong men(cyborg) fantasies - we must equitably and collectively use these technologies in ways that work for us - not for AI itself, or for the fabulously wealthy.
