About this listen

For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park. We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs wag their tails, but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? Why do they play tug-of-war with one dog, while showing their bellies to another? Why are some dogs shy, while others are bold? What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts-and how much can we know and understand?

Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by award-winning scientist and lifelong dog lover Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs' lives the best they can possibly be.

Rooted in the most up-to-date science on cognition and emotion - fields that have exploded in recent years - Canine Confidential is a wonderfully accessible treasure trove of new information and myth-busting. Peeing, we learn, isn't always marking; grass-eating isn't always an attempt to trigger vomiting; it's okay to hug a dog - on their terms; and so much more. There's still much we don't know, but at the core of the book is the certainty that dogs do have deep emotional lives, and that as their companions we must try to make those lives as rich and fulfilling as possible.

The narration was so BAD!

I’m not quite sure if the book was good or not, the narration was so bad I couldn’t get past the first 2 chapters...

Mediocre at best

I at first thought the narration was AI, so little intonation, but you get used to it. As the new guardian of a shelter puppy confiscated for cruelty I was looking for some real knowledge from this book. I was so excited only to be disappointed in the first several chapters when he would bring up something of interest: why do dogs bark, hump, dig etc only to say he would discuss the answer in a much later chapter. WTH? There is an inordinate amount of time on people’s opinions rather than on dog behavior. Perhaps I just chose the wrong book for my needs. I finished it hoping to glean some knowledge to help my new pup but it just never happened.

Absolutely Must Listen!

I urge every dog owner, lover and professional to listen to Canine Confidential. This book expands on so many avenues of our dog's behavior and well-being. Full of referenced studies to discuss why dogs do what they do. It also goes into the truth about dominance, dog parks, well-fare and the laws on dogs.
This book helped open up my mind to the individuality of each dog and how we must mind our dogs and remember how much we ask of them.

New info which enlightened me!

Canines rock my world and this book helped me to understand how our dog’s think? The narrator has a wonderful voice and conveys the information to inspire dog owners to be better for both themselves and their dogs.

For dog parents and hobby scientists

I have listened to plenty of books about dog behavior and science, and this one was really ... eye opening! Why? It is honest, the author simply says we really don't know much, and stresses how important it is to individually assess every dog, as every dog is different. I liked the examples, and the very positive approach towards dog-human relationships.

Full of great facts and biased flaws

Overall Mark is an incredibly smart researcher and his work and this book are full of great knowledge. His ability to condense year of research into little nuggets of useful knowledge for pet owners is great. All this made me incredibly surprised when I heard such false things as “French bulldogs average life span is 2 years” and 70% of dog are wild and staving and living miserable lives, commits that celebrate banning animal sales ( dose every dog have to fail at first home or be imported?) the book was enjoyable but these and others really took away from the story
